These rusty corduroy jeans seem to have shrunk gradually over time, and if there is one thing I cannot bear that is too-short jeans. Ankle-freezers, we used to call them. Unpicking the hemline and letting them down a touch is on my list of things to do… but in the meantime I have been mostly wearing them with boots like I am here, thus craftily disguising the lack of leg length. Brilliant, no? I’m a master at sartorial deviousness, hehe. To make matters worse, my “top” here is actually a dress.
Pants-as-leggings? But what is this? Aren’t there rules against this sort of thing? Is this a situation anywhere near as heinous as its evil twin situation; leggings-as-pants? Well, let us consider…
Leggings-as-pants… no, too awful to even think about it actually. A case of Too Much Information, for sure. I can’t see someone wearing their leggings as outerwear without feeling like I have to avert my eyes, don’t you?
But pants-as-leggings, well I have tried this once or twice before and responses have been mixed, but I think that slimline pants can actually be OK underneath a shirt dress like this, which is pretty much the equivalent of a super-loose, super-long shirt. It’s a rumpled casual look that hints that I have ransacked through the husband’s wardrobe again, but y’know what? I’m as toasty warm as!

Looks adorable! But only you tall folks can pull off a dress-as-shirt look! Us super shorties (5'2" to be exact) could never manage it. 🙂
And I'm all for the pants as leggings, but completely agree with the horribleness of leggings as pants. *shudder*
What Ginnie said…have had no coffee yet
hmm nice observation about leggings! i love wearing them!

Leggings as pants should only be worn at the gym.
I wear skinny jeans as leggings all the time and I am only 5ft3. I would never wear wide leg ones though because of my height.
I love this look! It works so well on you.
Thank-you for your comment. I also love to see the real person in the outfit – gives a much better idea of how the outfit works on the individual. However – for me – often it is such an ordeal to take a picture of myself, that the picture just doesn't happen for a very long time. I just decided that I need options to make life easier, so that's how I ended up with the "modeling assistant".
You look great! I'd love to pull off a look like that, but would have to sew both the slim pants and dress…too much to sew, too little time.
Pants as leggings, yeah why not but leggings as pants, why would you? Definitely too much information in my eyes. Don't people know what they look like… maybe they don't own a mirror 🙂
You ALWAYS look great!!
I love your casual look and I agree leggings should be worn under a long top – I`ve been fortunate not to see leggings worn as pants yet! Thanks for your comment on my blog – I suppose it is obvious now I have changed my blog name – I am a GP ( my other love after my family and sewing )
I like it when the lines between pieces of clothing disappear … In our mind! I usually like to see other people putting that in practice – ok, maybe mixed feeling abt leggings- as- pants, as you said:))
I've used the boots-over-too-short pants a number of times myself. 🙂 Leggings as pants, the only time I do this is when running in the winter, and then I think it is okay. and usually with a slightly longer shirt or jacket. But in normal life it would make me very self-concious. I like this, comfy casual but still nice. And the colors! I need some rust in my wardrobe. And some more yellow.
So clever! The main idea is to dress like you want to use … so anything goes, great!
Plaid shirt dress, yay! I actually like the look of dress/long top over slim pants. Especially in winter, when (at least here in Germany) leggins can be too cold if not layered with another pair of woolly tights…
It looks good to bring out the shirt aspect of your shirt dress. I like it over the skinny trousers, more feminine than with a more standard shirt length.
I wear very often a over-the-knee dress over jeans shorten by cuffs…. (do not know if I am clear here!), with a pair of oxfords… a kind of comfy twisted classical look…
so Yeah for pants as leggins!!!
I agree with leggings as pants…ugh! Invariably I see them worn this way on older women…and I feel embarassed.
I also have aversion to short leg length ….
