Iceberg garter-stitch jacket

With impeccable timing I have finished a toasty warm little knitted jacket.  Yeaah, just in time for these really hot hot summer days ahead, hehe…   I’m a bit sad about having to pack it away for a while, but that’s my own silly fault for starting my new winter cardi during winter. 😉 It is the shorter (version 1) Garter Jacket from Jo Sharp Knit 6…  As soon as I laid eyes on this design I loved the boxy shape and interesting stitch arrangement but when I saw an actual made-up example in real life I thought it was a bit bulky and a bit big in the body for my tastes.  So I took a punt that using a finer gauge yarn could work out quite good…. and I think it did!  Basically instead of using the thicker gauge Aran Tweed recommended in the instructions I used the thinner DK Tweed, knitted up to its own recommended tension (not the one in the pattern instructions for the thicker yarn) and I also knitted up the very smallest size.  I still followed all the instructions for number of stitches and rows etc… but the smaller scale gauge of the thinner yarn resulted in a smaller and finer cardi; not too thick and just right in my opinion. Another bonus to this approach was that I needed only 9 balls, as opposed to the 11 balls required in the thicker yarn.
Those gorgeous wooden buttons are made by Dad.  Thank you Dad!  I am lucky to have such a clever father.

  1. Lovely jacket.

  2. Very nice! Perfect to just throw on as you head out the door, or for snuggling on the sofa in the evening. I have to admit that I am just as bad, I always manage to finish projects off season!

  3. What a lovely jacket and setting..oh I wish I was by the beach too.

  4. Lovely ! What an excellent job you made of it ! Finishing an item in its expected season is always troublesome as like you say – we start winter projects in winter ! Great photos too, love your dog ! xx

  5. Very lovely. I love the autumnal color scheme. 🙂

  6. Very nice jacket. I love all of the Christmas ornaments, decorations and stockings you've posted in the last few posts.

  7. This is a darling jacket. Can you use it during cool evenings?

  8. I like it a lot! Next winter will always come in the end. I have a vest I started knitting in July, that doesn't look like it will be finished this winter at all! I am a very s-l-o-w knitter!

  9. What a perfect little topper! That colour will be perfect with SO many things in your wardrobe come Winter!

    Gorgeous!

  10. very pretty, I wish I had something like that right now! Once winter comes on your side of the globe, you'll be glad you made it

  11. What a special jacket, light but cozy. We're supposed to be creating in season?

  12. So I'm not the only one who finishes things at the "wrong" time of the year! Wonderful cardigan! You'll be glad to get it out come the cooler weather.

  13. I admired that jacket too when I saw it in a autumn liftout in Better Homes & Gardens earlier in the year but haven't quite got to anything in there. I did visit Lindcraft the other day in search of some wool for a project while I am on my summer holiday. It is really hard to get my head around wool at this time of the year.

By the way, I saw your much admired cork reindeer in their latest edition as well.

  14. very nice!

  15. So simple and yet so beautiful

  16. Beautiful jacket! I seem to prefer knitting simple stitch patterns in clean and structural pieces like this. I will have to keep this design in mind.

  17. Love the jacket and your jeans too. I love working with corduroy.

  18. This is lovely! Gorgeous buttons too.

  19. I'm totally in awe of your skills with the yarn. This is lovely!

  21. nice jacket and oh yes i love those buttons!

  22. BTW i forgot to mention there is a Giveaway @ my blog; A leather Vegan Handbag to be won Please do participate!

    Thanks

  23. A very useful jacket. Love the colour and simplicity of design.

  24. Gorgeous sweater! I always love to see your knitted projects.

  25. I'm so impressed you can knit things that can be worn in public, not to mention sew your own jeans. Lovely dog, by the way.

  26. It looks terrific in a finer gauge, what a good idea. I made the long verion in Aran for my sister last year and it was rather bulky and boxy, but she wears it as a coat with lots of layers underneath and loves it (poor cold Melbournite that she is ;). Did you use a different stitch pattern for the sleeves? The photo looks as if there are raised crosses on a stocking stitch background, very pretty!

  27. The shape is just PERFECT!!! – might become MY winter project…

Gosh, I love your pictures! I WANT SUMMER TOO!!!

  28. Oh, I really like this! And it looks even accessible to a not-very-skilled knitter like me.

You'll laugh – when you said "knitted up just in time" I thought, of course, it is sweater weather – then remembered you were on the other side of the world. 🙂

  29. It's really lovely. I made a Garter Yoke cardy out of that yarn, and the colour is awesome. However, it pilled terribly within a few wears. So disappointing and I will not use it again. I hope yours fares better 🙂

  30. Thank you all!
Kbenco, the sleeves are plain reverse stocking stitch, just like the pattern.

  31. Cornelis; thank you for your comment! That is very disappointing that your cardi has pilled so quickly… this is the 3rd garment I've made using this yarn and not had such a problem so far. I hope they haven't changed anything about the yarn to cause this?

  32. Really lovely.

  33. I wonder… I made mine over two years ago, and the yarn could easily have been in the shop for a while before that, as it is a quiet shop. Here's hoping your lot is better : )
Coincidentally, I had to shop interstate whilst on holiday, because I was living in FNQ. Cairns, to be exact, and there are only two stores that sell wool. It was always a bit of a struggle knitting DK weight in anything but the coldest two months of the year. However, I couldn't stop something I liked so much.

  34. Love the jacket. Really simple, but looks so comfy. Stylish too!
