After tonnes of deliberation, I’ve bought a new lens; an early… something? present for myself ๐
My old lens is a 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6, which is a really fantastic little lens that produces great shots. But for a while I have been really wanting to up the ante on my pictures and it has been frustrating that I have not been able to change the settings just how I would like. So I’ve bought the 50mm f/1.4.
The top photo was taken with the new f/1.4, and the lower picture with my older lens, both adjusted to shady conditions.
I’ve still got quite a way to go with learning how to best appreciate it, but I’m pretty excited at the prospect of experimenting… what do you think?
Details:
Top; the bamboo shoot top from Pattern Magic, white linen, details here
Skirt; based upon Vogue 1247, coffee coloured lace with silk lining, details here
Sandals; Misano, from MarieClaire boutique

The bottom picture is alot clearer, but I like the the colours in the top, the bottom looks like an overcast day. Love the skirt lace is very "in"
How fun!! I like the new effects a lot already!
Have fun with your lens ๐

That new lens works a treat – love that you have the foreground in focus and the background out of focus. The detail on your skirt and the tree are really crisp with the new lens too.
Love the new lens–I've been wanting one too! Huge difference in depth of field between the two pictures, if I'm thinking of that right. My brain turns to mush when I try to understand technical aspects of photography, but I think you will really enjoy that new lens.
I have a 50mm f1.8 and I love the blur of the wide open lens, so my favourite is the top one. I think your creations (and you) will stand out even more than with your other lens. Enjoy.
I haven't got a clue when it comes to lenses. I use whatever is on my hubby's Canon 40D. I really must get into getting to grips with photography!
Have fun with your new lens. The top picture has you in the focus.
It's a subtle but notable difference. The light in the first picture is warm and seems to glow. You are truly multi-talented: sewing, baking, photography!
Always love your photography. Enjoy your new lens!
Fascinating! I agree that the top picture "glows" and it really makes the outfit pop. You are so multi-talented!
It's good to buy new toy sometimes ๐ Have fun ๐
Enjoy playing with your new toy
All too complicated for little old me. I have a point and shoot camera and that is enough. I am in awe of people who can do more. Enjoy learning all about your new toy and we will enjoy the outcome.
Looks like the second one will give a far stronger and sharper shot with whatever light available – you will have a ball shooting your garments with this. Happy playing … J
Iยดm looking forward to watching some great photos! You have a great eye for choosing the settings and with this new tool and a little practice (and the model and the great outfits you create) they are going to be brilliant!
Enjoy with ur latest gadge. Nice clicks. Lovely lace skirt!
New lenses are awesome – having a wider aperture available to you will be great fun! Looking forward to seeing more gorgeous photos.
I love my 50mm f/1.4! Have fun!
Lovely, how artistic! I like the feel of the picture.
I can't wait to see even more lovely pictures of your garments.
Lovely light and I so adore your lacey skirt. I use this lens a lot as does my husband (who keeps stealing it). Being able to open it up that wide lets a lot of possibilities in ;).
Enjoy your new toy Carolyn!!!
Lovely outfit! I think the new photo is much clearer than the old. It's amazing how much difference a new bit of equipment makes, isn't it?
To be honest, I can't discern any quality difference in the photo, but it may be a limitation of my computer. Love that top – and I remember it from before. Also, those trees are incredible. I'm a real fan of trees, though I don't tend to hug them. A good bunch of trees give me the same inner peace as a quiet beach.
The bottom picture doesn't seem as clear, but looks a lot lighter. I know when I got my new, much better camera, I had to adjust how I was shooting to get the pictures as clear. And now they are so much better than I could ever have taken with the old one. That Bamboo Shoot design is the cleverest!
