the paper doll project

(I’ve pledged to wear only clothes handmade by me this year and to sketch my daily outfits in my Fashionary.  I’m calling this; the paper doll project)
6th-11th September

18th-23rd September

G’day  ðŸ™‚
So, you may have noticed that I haven’t put in any links to the individual items in this post… see, I kind of figured that that probably that wasn’t very interesting to anyone by now, which is ok of course   🙂  However if anyone is interested in seeing a particular sketched garment for real in a real photo then please ask and I will provide a link to that post in the comments.
Cool?
In new-season wardrobe news, I have been making and have things to show.  The photography-me is typically lagging, like the proverbial tortoise, way behind the making-me.  Which is a hare.  Racing ahead.  Um, bit nonsensical there, but hopefully my drift is getting got!
The weather has been awful lately.  We’ve had staaacks of rain; officially it’s been the wettest winter in a decade.  The thing is, rain is actually very good news here because we have had a terrible drought for the past decade.  So rain is technically a good thing, but everyone is a bit depressed and not coping simply because we have forgotten what it is like to live with rain!

13 Thoughts on “the paper doll project

  1. I've always thought rain was romantic, whether the wild storms I grew up with in Oklahoma or the continual silent drizzle we get here in England. What I hate is grey sky with nothing happening – like living in a tupperware bowl.

The though crossed my mind looking over your paper doll post is that at the end of the year you'll have the means to count how many times you wore a given garment. If you still know how much it cost you to make, you'll be able to calculate a cost-per-wear…or is that just to geeky? It sounds like something I'd love! Look forward to your new news!

    • I don't think it's too geeky. It seems like it would be an interesting stat.

We're in a bad drought here and welcome any rain. We actually need close to 40 inches of rain to bring us to the low level of drought restrictions.

  2. I like the rain. 🙂 I also really like your paper doll project!

  3. 🙂 I still like looking at your paperdolls. We're having similar weather right now (well, this week. it was loads colder last week).

  4. I actually like guessing if I remember well your garments, so I'd like to have a link option.
Whenever someone talks about rain and bad moods, I think of Eurythmics and the song "Here comes the rain again". I'm all about sun and sunshine, since rain and cold weather really make me feel depressed.

    • thank you AnaJan! I'll go back to putting in those links then, I wasn't actually sure if anyone was interested or not, so it's nice to hear that some people are 🙂

  5. We've had enough rain the last few days, 111mm (just over 4 inches) in a few hours the other day! Plus I'm sure we'll get a lot more before fall is out.
I'm looking forward to seeing your new makes!

I know that you have pledged to only wear home- sewn for life, but I've wondered lately what your opinion is about thrift shopping? (With the express purpose of re-fashioning, re-making or tailoring to fit) Would you still consider that 'store bought fashion' or 'home-sewn'? It is kind of a sticky subject – the items are store bought originally, but in purchasing from a thrift store you are actually helping to keep some of these items from the landfill or worse. So, I guess that makes this my second question – In thrift store shopping are we actually helping the environment, or supporting ready made in a round about way? What do you think?

    • Anne; yes, you are right, buying old second hand items is definitely a good thing for the environment! Although unfortunately the op shops around about here are pretty grim pickings, seriously. We just don't get the quality here that you do in the US! For the purposes of my own self-imposed project this year, I am only wearing clothes I have made myself either from scratch, or if it has been made from an old item of clothing, then it has to be substantially re-fashioned by me, by which I mean completely cut apart and reconstructed into something different. Of course there's nothing wrong with buying something from an op shop and wearing it just as it is, just that for this year I have chosen to wear only things made by me, as a personal experiment.
And I don't want to imply there's anything wrong with buying new clothes for yourself either, absolutely no judgement here! because obviously not everyone has the desire nor the interest in making their own clothes and equally some people hate second hand clothing with a passion: really my year of wearing only my own stuff is just a personal choice albeit one that has actually taught me quite a lot about myself and my own tastes and attitudes to fashion and buying habits… I've been thinking about all these things a lot and will probably write something about it at the end of the year 🙂

  6. Rain? huh! you don't know the meaning! Seriously, I love your paper dolls, and saw a couple of outfits I wanted to know more about so scrolled down quickly only to find there were no details this time -darn! I do actually click and go over all your info-links – any chance you can just put them in? PLEASE?

    • Thank you for the vote of confidence Maureen; I'll start putting them in again 🙂 Most of these garments sketched in this post here have appeared in very recent paper doll sketches, if you do see something you'd like to see in a *real* photo the links will probably be in a fairly recent "paper doll" post.

  7. I usually click the links for items I have forgotten but I can always search using the names provided 🙂 I hear you on the rain…although it's the long grey days that tend to make my spirits droop, more than the rain itself. Sadly, there are a lot of grey days in England!

  8. From the looks of your drawings, the weather is getting warmer. While rain is depressing, I hope you've now got plenty of water in those dams to get through the summer heat.

  9. Ooh, I like that big polka dotty dress… it'd be so fun to hover over a particular outfit and then click! see it in past entries/wearings. (Although that stuff takes html work so I'm not suggesting more work… lord knows the rest of blogging and photographing is work.) Happy you got rain. I know what you mean. It has been so horribly droughty where I live for the last five years, but if it rains for more than three days people get really grumpy. My garden is happier, though!
