Fulfilling a need rather than a want, I made another lingerie set for myself. It’s not speccie* but just a bread-and-butter everyday set, with a Tshirt bra and two pairs of matching plain undies. The fabric is a strawberry pink cotton/lycra blend from the Fabric Store in Melbourne, bought for the specific purpose of a new lingerie set but I was a little shocked when I dug it out of my stash. The colour was a bit more er, pink! than I remember. I’m sure it used to be a lot closer to my skin colour. Honestly, I swear it got pinker while it was sitting marinating in my stash. Seriously!
Anyway.
The bra is made using KwikSew 3300, modified by adding in foam cup inserts within the layers of the cup and hand-pickstitching the cup to the inside layer. The two pairs of identical matching undies are both the bikini bottoms of McCalls 2772, another old favourite that I’ve used for all my undies. It has a nice high-cut leg that I think I prefer to the boy leg cut. I have a small handful of boy-leg style undies and I find I’m always itching to hoist them up at the sides all day. Maybe I should wear a boy-leg more to get used to them. Get out of that rut. OK, next time. Maybe 😉
This is my favourite sort of style; a plain and simple little set, easy and comfy to wear with the perfect amount of padding and structure to keep me happy. Basics. Comfort food for the smalls drawer. 🙂
However;
I’m boring. I know I’m boring. I’m boring myself too! My new set is not exciting. Well, are basics ever exciting? This was definitely a cake exercise, not icing. I want to make icing now. I think I need to break away from the tried and true and make a more wow set next. I’m actually investigating a few different bra patterns *gasps*
*”speccie”; spectacular

Its pretty, I like the color even if it did get More er pink :O) LOL. I bought that bra pattern, its on the list.
They may not be speccie to you, but I am in awe of anyone who makes their own lingerie. And these are very pretty!
This is a lovely set. I adore the pink!
Not a bit boring to me – I think they are adorable:)
Hey, you make your own underwear. That's not boring to me at all!
Pink and chocolate, a great combination!
I can't imagine make my own lingerie ! I'm impress
special or not, i'm still in awe of anyone who makes their own lingerie! need to try sometime… 🙂
I think this might come under the category of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Lovely work.
I'm all for a bit of bread and butter sewing (I just try to make sure it's the equivalent of french bread and butter 🙂 ). Carolyn can I just ask when you attach your lingerie lace do you stitching it twice as in a straight stitch with right sides together, then turn and top stitchwith the 3 step zigzag? Thanks heaps, 🙂
Fabric Tragic thank you! and yes you sew the elastic down twice, but be sure use a shallow zig-zag stitch for the first (right sides together) as a straight stitch on elastic is just asking for snapped stitches! trim the fabric edge away close to the stitching, turn under and 3-step zig-zag from the right side. 🙂
You're a legend, will try this next time! Thanks so much 🙂
Beautiful! So impressed with this.
Very inspiring!
I think these are undies that would be perfect for anyone, and what's wrong with that?! This set is lovely, Carolyn. I want to try bra making, but I don't want to have to order exotic fabric and patterns that are not in English, so I will have to try this. This set is exactly what I like to wear. These look comfortable yet feminine.
I also make my own undies, and for me it's all about the bow! Just the right touch, I say.
Cake is good! And I love that phrase–the smalls drawer! I wish we used it. It's funny how finicky we get about certain leg cuts. Since making my own, I've taken to making and wearing all sorts of underwera styles depending on my mood (or clothes) so I've gotten quite used to the "feels".
I'm inspired to have a go at making my own lingerie, but don't really know where to start. Did you take a course or just plunge in with a pattern and have a go? Do the patterns have really good instructions? And where do you get your fabric and all the bits and pieces you need? I hope you have a chance to answer this, if you're not too busy.
Thank you Amanda! I just bought a pattern and followed the instructions. IMO the KwikSew 3300 bra pattern I am using has fantastic instructions, very helpful, comprehensive and easy to follow. I don't know where you are? but I buy all the extras like underwires, foam inserts, hook and eye tape rings and sliders at Spotlight 🙂
