Some thoughts on corduroy jeans

Dressing down,  (and a dressing-down; my husband said, looking at this photo, hmmm, not your best look… thanks darling…)
These corduroy jeans are not really wearing well at all, and are now my equivalent of tracky-dacks.  They are still quite warm, but the fabric is thin and not very stretchy, so bags out rapidly in places where one does not want one’s jeans to bag out.  Sad, because I was so pleased with these, and thought they’d be good ones for mixing and matching all winter long.  The colour was just right.  And I only made them last year, so you’d think they would last a little longer, right?  But quality shows, my friends, quality shows…
I adore corduroy jeans.  They are so comfortable and warm; more comfortable that denim, and a lot warmer too.  So much more practical for winter.  I loved wearing them as a child, and I dressed my own children in corduroy jeans during winter all through their childhood.  I loved seeing my children in cords and white Tshirts; such a cute look, and just what little children should look like.  But of course kids look cute in whatever, even cords with baggy bottoms and knees.  Adults, not so much.

I think I need to find myself a supplier of quality corduroy.

Details:
Jeans; Burda 7863 with modifications, bone corduroy, details here
Top; adapted from top “a” from Unique Clothes Any Way You Like by Natsuno Hiraiwa, blue shot cotton, details here
Cardigan; my own design, knitted from Jo Sharp Silk Road DK Tweed in Brindle, details here (button made by my Dad!)
Socks; (not seen) old and comfy ones, also handknit by me,  here
Shoes; Francesco Morichetti (uggies all the rest of the day at home though)

Later edit:  You know what?  This outfit and these jeans actually do look so much better, more appropriate, with my ugg boots.  But I’m not taking another picture; just imagine ugg boots on the bottom…

  1. ah Carolyn, they're cords! Tell your husband they are supposed to be loose in all the wrong places. I like them, and think it is refreshing to see "old" clothes on folks.

  2. Hooray for uggs! I'm delighted to hear that at least someone likes them…I live in my tall black uggs all winter, my mum turned me on to them, she used to wear them surfing in the 70s.

Of course now (in America at least), one only sees them on miniskirted teenagers. I ask you, what is the point of warm feet if your legs are freezing?

Heh. I sound just like an old lady…

  3. I love corduroy jeans too – they are my much preferred winter wear because they are so much nicer to put on than jeans.

Now I have found than thin wale cord bags out worse than fat wales, however, the wide wale cord is a whole lot more of a look than the narrow …

I have also heard of people interfacing the knee area to reduce the worst of the baggies. Not much you can do about the back sagging though except to wear tunics..

Corduroy is very hard to source here, good quality cord even harder.. such a shame because it's such a great fabric.

  4. I noticed Emma One Sock has listed some good quality cord. Problem is though, it's printed in the wackiest colours. You might get the quality, but you'd be faced with a whole new problem – how does one pull off lairy cord jeans. I don't even want to get started on the coordinating issues. What a stunning day!

  5. That's too bad about the fabric not wearing well. I used to not be very careful about fabric choice, but after having a flannel shirt I made for my partner shred on its third trip through the washing machine, I'm much more careful now.

  6. I'm in love. I bought Caramel, navy and brown corduroy this past winter and did nothing with it. Yours are a great fit too.

  7. I think that's the hardest thing we have to overcome as home sewists. Obtaining the knowledge about fabrics, then finding them and then choosing quality. The more I learn, the more I find out I need to learn.

  8. 🙂 Carolyn, lovely of you to stop in at my place and comment!

  9. I love corduroy, i recycled a pair of trousers from the carboot to make a skirt and have washed it loads and the quality is lovely. The corduroy i got from my local sewing store is looking awful though. Hope you fing a good source!

  10. Like the others I love corduroy too! And I also agree that stretching out is just what happens, no big deal.

  11. I am a big fan of corduroy jeans, but of course, I've never attempted to make them myself. I saw you in a pair of corduroy shorts many months ago and just yesterday, I finally found a pair to call my own. You were the inspiration.

  12. Well they look good anyway! I have never made jeans
