Another blast from the past for today. Actually this photograph is marked “Father’s Day” so should have come before the previous oldie I put up here, as this date puts Tim at only 2-3 months old. He is held by my husband (wearing a jumper I had knitted for him, too!) and flanked by Craig’s Dad and Grandad, so this is a four generation photo. Quite cool, no?
Tim is wearing a pale green outfit I had knitted for our new baby whilst I was still pregnant. It is in fisherman’s rib; thus turning me off this stitch for many years, man, you know how I’m into quick knitting projects…! Come to think of it, I’ve not knitted another fisherman’s rib project since…
The outfit was from a Patons baby booklet and comprised pants and a cute little fisherman’s jumper, with a half tab button front and a little collar. Oh, but it was cute! The buttons I used on the front were little wooden toggle buttons, hand-carved by my father, and were adorable. I still have some of the leftover buttons in a little paper bag, marked “Timothy’s buttons”. I’ve never done another project worthy of them….
I don’t know where this little outfit is now. I thought I had passed it on to one of my sisters-in-law but it seems to have disappeared. This makes me a little sad. But I know I shouldn’t attach too much sentimentality to “things”. After all, I’ve got the most important, er “things” here with me still, meaning the men in my family. Right? Right.
(if you want to see what this cute little bubbsie looks like now, go here)
(On another note; you can just see a glimpse of the collar of the shirt my husband is wearing underneath, which has since been refashioned here)
What a fun blast from the past. How cool. A 4-generation picture. Too bad you lost track of the baby outfit, but thankgoodness you have the picture of it. (and of course, the incomparable joy of the lad himself, now a young man). I regret I have no pictures of MOST of what I created in years past… but at least now with all the blogging and pattern review, it will be a fun thing to look back on in years ahead.
Lovely photo and worth treasuring. I know what you mean about attaching sentimentality to things. I once asked my sister about flowergirl dresses that I'd made for her daughters at my wedding. I wanted to pass them on to my daughters. She was quite unashamed that she had "thrown them out" years before – hand beaded, silk and organza dresses. I was quietly livid.
It is an adorable baby outfit!
When my oldest was small, I ended up the recipient of a box of vintage baby gear from my great-aunt, most of it dating to the 60s. It was kind of difficult—on the one hand there were many adorable outfits, on the other hand they were mostly too precious to use! (Especially the fur-trimmed snow-suits. Spitty baby + fur??)
Hopefully wherever the suit is now, it's being treasured as it deserves.
What a special photo to have of your family! And what a lovely gift to sew with buttons that your dad made!
What a wonderful photo!
I know how you feel. I have a few things that have been lost through the years. When my kids were young I think I was too quick to pass on outgrown clothes. Quite a few were handmade, too. I don't like to think about it or it makes me sad!
Hmmmm .. did you knit such a thing for #2 and #3? 🙂 My friend just returned to me all the woolies I knit for goose when he was in diapers (do you guys call 'em nappies over there?) – she had borrowed them, anywho, along with your post it is reminding me I need to do a post about them, since they are the pinnacle of my knitting expertise … You have several generations of handsome men in your family, no? I
