All dressed up with no place to go…

This dress is sooo cool and light and easy.  It’s funny to think this was last year’s Christmas dress… it’s done pretty well.  Perhaps getting a bit “round the house-ish” but still quite nice.  So here I am today, all dressed up kinda nice to venture out to the shops.  But this is the thing…
The funny thing about Australia is that from Christmas Day until well past New Years Day, almost nothing happens.  By that I mean, a lot of shops and businesses will be shut.   Christmas Day being on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so of course both Monday and Tuesday last week were public holidays.  It’s almost a whole week of near shut-down.  Some of the BIG stores have BIG sales, but sensible people avoid those like the plague.
So it’s like this.  The kids are on holidays and it has been extremely hot; I feel like all of us are slumping into a heat induced coma and we are starting to forget what day it is… which is partly why I decided today was the day to rouse myself.   I should get out and tick a few errands off my list, make a few essential purchases at the grocery store.  My inner just-do-it gal is screaming at me to… well, just do it.   So off I trot only to find the streets deserted for yet another day.  Whaaaat?  Ohhhh, New Years’ Day delayed public holiday…. turn around and drive home again.
Luckily for me, I have a little local supermarket I walk to nearly every day which will be open for any essentials, but, well it’s not every day I can motivate myself to actually drive places, park and get bigger business done.
I hope I can get motivated all over again tomorrow…

  1. Haha, that last sentence sounds just like me. Add to that the layers of snow and ice my car is hidden under and I'm not sure when's the last time I drove it?! Your dress is gorgeous, worn wherever.

  2. In Germany we don't know a tradition like making up a public holiday – if Christmas Day is on a Saturday… Well, that's it!
Just on the contrary the shops make their best deals the days after because nearly everybody want's to change their Christmas Gifts 😉
We just came back from Italy where it seems to be just like in Australia: the Italiens like to make party from the 25th of December to the 6th of January and you never know if the shop you want to buy something is open or not.

I really like lace and embroidery so I like your dress very much. And the sandals!!!

Cheer up, the next working day is on the way 🙂

    Ciao,

  3. Haha, I work in retail and at a DFO. Trust me, stuff has happened. We have been open everyday except Christmas and New Years Day. It seems like everyone has come to our DFO. This christmas period has been the hardest of my 5 years working retail, and its helped me in my decision to make it my last year well before the silly season starts. Love the dress, I think the lace makes it! Im now going to get this pattern.

  4. Its strange about all our holidays. I had it in my head that Tuesday was a holiday too, but that was last week. It is confusing! Your dress looks so cool for this heat.

  5. Oh, pretty dress!

Us Americans are so consumer minded that the stores are only closed for the holiday, it seems. Even the day after Christmas, on a SUNDAY, the stores were open early at 7AM for after christmas sales (but being sensible, we avoided those… )

Hmmm, I'm seeing Christmas in the summer might make one feel extremely lazy …. We are back to business as usual today. Kevin is back at work.

  6. I love this dress! Me and my Mom went shopping today we forgot it was Bank holiday and nearly everywhere was closed…except the sewing shop 🙂 so i was happy.

  7. It's a beautiful dress…that I couldn't begin to wear at this time of year. Better luck tomorrow on breaking out of the holiday funk.
