Gingham PJs

I do apologise for the complete and utter lack of chicness and elegance today, and this is not an ensemble one would ever see gracing the pages of Vogue magazine…  but I’m sure every woman secretly harbours an undying love for flannelette PJ bottoms in her heart… yes?  I know I know, we are supposed to spend our days swanning about in some elegant little number complete with gorgeous heels, and then at home slip into some sort of lace-y, slinky, satiny little thing for our down time…
But seriously.  Let’s get real here.  Our secretly favourite part of the day is really when we get to throw off the elegance and put on our extremely unsexy and unflattering but warm and cuddly and oh-so-comfy ginormously huge elastic waist pants; and curl up on the couch with a book and a cup of tea.
Or is that just me….?   πŸ™‚
I am taking part in two pyjama parties here!  (ooh, it’s been yonks since I went to a pyjama party!) firstly Terri‘s Pyjama Party today, over in her secret room.  And also Karen’s Pyjama Party; only that party was planning to make their pj’s over a period of a few weeks.  As it was, my old pj bottoms ripped a bit when I sat on a splinter recently… it’s OK, I’m not sad; they were old and getting pretty thin about the bottoomba *, but I did need some newies, fast!
(* bottoomba; old family word, pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable)

So I ran out to Spotlight, the fabric was bought and I made these up in about half an hour, that same afternoon, to wear that same night.  Yah, I know; I am not known for my patience.  But well, these are just pj’s for goodness sakes!  the easiest make in the world…
My pattern is kinda self-drafted… when my very last pair of store-bought pj pants wore out I cut them up for a pattern, added a few little modifications of my own and have been using that ever since.
They have an elastic waist, two inseam side pockets and a false fly.  Normally I loathe false anything on a garment, but paradoxically I really do like a false fly on pj’s.  Just a random excuse to sport a few cute and really fun buttons, for no reason other than frivolously whimsical decoration.  You know, the sort of button you secretly fall in love with but could never use on a real garment  πŸ™‚  These buttons were leftovers from these shorts here, when I had to buy a card of 4 buttons but only needed 1.

  1. This are cozy and perfect for the snenanigans that will go on at this event! I've already come across several posts…and I wish I had posted my post earlier.

  2. Even your pjs have pockets. I am impressed.
I have those exact buttons and thought they were just perfect for actual garments, but I admit, they give the pjs a certain air of whimsy.

  3. Cute PJs! I like the flower buttons. You are always so beautifully dressed and put together that it is kind of nice to know that you also have mornings mooching around in pjs!

  4. You manage to still look very elegant in spite of wearing very comfy clothes. I agree that at home one should be comfortable…in fact I go for comfort most of the time these days.

  5. I have the MOST beautiful vintage rose silk and lace robe that I wore once around a boyfriend who pretty much laughed at me since i looked like a madame the day after a busy night at the whore house. So now it just hangs on my door while I pad around in too short/stretched out/stained jam pants. I need to do make some of these. And I Love your fabric choice – they look pretty chic for comfies!

  6. I was given a beautiful silk robe by a friend to wear last xmas but I am too afraid to use it so it is just the old comfy nightwear that comes out .

  7. No its not just you! My husband and I aleays look forward to coffee on the porch or patio in our comfy cozies! Yours are so cute!

  8. Thanks for your comment on my blog, I didn't think you were casting aspersions on the buttons,it is hard to convey a slightly teasing tone in a blog comment, sorry! I think they are very cute buttons, both on shorts and pjs, and I have much more wild buttons that I wear on allegedly day-time garments in public, but probably should restrict to my jammies ;).

  9. Nothing better than coming home from work and slipping into something comfortable – flannie PJ's, ugg boots and a tshirt (braless of course for extra glamour!)

  10. Love the PJ pants – for me I love slipping into mine at the end of particularly stressful days at work.

Thanks Carolyn for all your advice on my dress, I should have an update soon.

  11. Your pj's look so comfy. I love flannel for cooler temps too. The false fly with the floral buttons was just the right touch to make them extra special.

  12. I have had a request from my daughter for more PJ pants – I never thought about putting pockets in before but given that she would live in them given half a chance I think they go in the next ones!

Sienna looks blissed out too.Nice to relax and enjoy life outside.

  13. Ok now we are talking! You made two pair right? One for you, one for me? I love flannel jammy bottoms. I have some that are just about thread bare I plan to take apart and use as a pattern. You know how it is if you get a pair that just fit perfect you hate to give them up. I figured well heck use them for a pattern! They are actually mens I bought several years ago. I am to long legged for womens RTW ones. I agree the buttons are cuteness!

  14. Those look great, and I love the fact that you were able to find a use for the last three buttons on the card. My favorite pair of pajama bottoms were a RTW mens pair in a beautiful twill weave flannel, with side pockets and a single welt pocket at the back. I'll have to have a go at recreating them.
