… for me!
Fabric; slithery, slinky-malinki poly knit from Fabulous Fabrics in a divinely luxuriously glossy mocha shade; all elastic and other findings from Homecraft Textiles. I wanted to make a Sierra bra for myself too; and while I love lace-y underthingies, this time I went for smooth, sleek and sophisticated, with a grownup vibe more befitting to an ancient old crone such as myself.
Haha, no really, I do have a nice selection of frillies already and just wanted a change of pace 🙂
Features; none. Letting the fabric glow on its own with absolutely nil embellishment.
LOVE this unadorned look, I mean I adore pretty bits and bobs too but sometimes the simplest and plainest of styles in a sophisticated colour and liquid-y fabric like this feels just as gorgeous!
Technical blahdy-blah: I cut two backs, clean finished the seams within the layers, and also lined the front/cups with self fabric to about centre front. I just left the lining CF straight edge floating unfinished on the inside; it’s not going to fray or anything and doesn’t show up at all. The remainder of the fronts/straps are single layered. The lower edge is finished with elastic, folded under and zig-zagged on the right side, just the same finish as the top edges and all edges of the knickers (as pictured below). I cut the elastic 7% shorter than the edge it was to be attached to, measuring the paper pattern pieces.
That black hook and eye tape at the back is bothering me, but well, colour options here are pretty limited. I’ve found Homecraft Textiles to have the absolute best array of lingerie elastics to be found in Perth. Well worth hitting up.
2x pairs of undies, both super plain Watson briefs. Boring and barely worth a photo… close-up for elastic-attachment detail purposes only.
Full set: so normally I love my things to be photographed looking artfully arranged to best show them off but couldn’t resist going the full Merchant and Mills here.
What is that aesthetic anyway? just kind of throw it down in a messed up crumpled heap on the floor, y’know? just like when your teenagers kick their grotty clothes aside as they step into the shower or something, and leave them there. For days, if you don’t nag gently point it out.
*deep breath*
Embrace the crumple.
Feel the crumple.
BE. The crumple.
Hehe, not to diss Merchant and Mills! I actually have the workbook myself… a recent birthday pressie, and heavy hints had nothing to do with it at all! *cough cough* and I love a lot of the stuff in it! Just that the screwed-up-and abandoned-on-the-floor thing cracks me up. The new cool… OK!
Actually, my clothing is more usually kept like below…
Aaaah, that’s better! *sigh of contended happiness* ooo, did someone say neat freak? Order and method, my friends. Order and method:)
Happiness factor; plain, but supremely happy with that plainness, and I love the wraparound bra style; it’s nice to have something a bit different. Construction, smooth sailing all the way. For visual purposes I’m deducting one point for the black hook and eyes at the back. 9/10 🙂

Another lovely set! I had a look at the description of the bra on the website and based on that, I get the impression that there is no elastic in the bottom edge (at least on their lace version). Did you finish yours that way? And what is it like to wear?
I don't think this has ever happened before, but I find myself wondering if my bust is too large for this pattern 😉 I think I would need size L and everything… And shop for wider lace.
Thanks Lauriana! Yes, I should have said, I added elastic to the bottom edge of both the bras; measured the length of all edges and cut the elastic 7% shorter. Reason, because I didn't use border lace like the instructions stipulated and had to adapt the design for regular fabric, so had to modify my construction accordingly 🙂
The site does say to not use added elastic for a stretch lace bra; I can't say how that would go, it could work I think because the elasticated straps cross over and underneath your bust before wrapping to the back again.
The bra is for smaller sizes. I cut a Large for myself, but probably could have gone with a Medium actually; this fabric being quite stretchy. However, it is an unstructured bra with no shaping so you should pick a size taking into consideration how stretchy your fabric. How does it feel? well I think it is very comfortable and sits quite nice and secure.
Also, yes, if you're going to make it like the one in the sew along, you do need very wide border lace! I couldn't find any wide enough at our fabric stores here in Perth, which is why I made these two bras just using regular fabric the way I did 🙂
Your set is very chic, too! The plain mocha fabric underlines the refined pattern at it's best. In addition, the plain fabric surely can be worn under knit fabrics without impression marks. 🙂
My clothing presentation aesthetic is more The Pile, in various rooms around the house. That fabric is lovely…. Do you think these bras will be hot come summer with the extra layer in the wrap? I've never seen one like it before!
Pretty! This is such a different bra than what I'm used to seeing that I am quite intrigued!
What a great set! I haven't seen this bra pattern before and now I feel the urge to make one myself! How great would it look as swim wear? Oh Carolyn, thanks for the inspiration again!
I so wish this bra pattern was suitable for larger cup sizes because both your versions are beautiful.
Hurray for something different! I love the chic color fabric that you used. Australia is too far to travel right now. I won't be able to steal that bra set so I'll have to play copycat (with a different color hook and eyes). My first Sierra is on the cutting table right now. I'm a C cup and using 10 inch lace. We'll see how that works. If it does, a mocha bra is in my future! BTW, the first artistic array of clothing does remind me of my children.
Your set does not disappoint! I like it in the very sleek fabric – really emphasizes the nice design of the bra.
thank you so much Noelle! 🙂
I had been wondering about making one of these myself, and am so glad to see your comments on how it went. I may still have a go at some stage, I'm still trying to get over my post holidays blues, but at least I will have children back at school tomorrow!
A very beautiful set. I love the bra shape but I suspect it wouldn't suit my size.
I'm with you on the tossed clothing though. Makes me cringe. Neat freaks of the world unite!
The most elegant set, and lovely post, thank you, genius Carolyn!
I read those straps as leather upon first look, raw! LoveLoveLove..
thank you so much Oda! Hmmm, yes; leather straps would look pretty cool! 🙂
Wow, that's the coolest thing I ever did see. Fabulous!
