Domestic diva III

This is an all-new outfit for today; another pair of corduroy jeans, these in my new favourite neutral, greige.  These are made using Burda 7863 again, fitted to me, with a zip placket and coin pocket added, and flared out from knee to ankle by about ten centimetres overall circumference wider than the pattern.  To line the waistband and pocket I used the very last of the leftover fabric from Sam’s shirt.   (and thanks, for your kind words of comfort about Sam being away, he will be back in a few weeks!)
The T-shirt is made from the leftovers of my Jailbreak dress, my own design, drafted roughly from T-shirts I already have.  I wanted to have the neck, sleeve and hemline binding stripes lined up perpendicularly to the body of the T-shirt; the only difficulty to achieving this effect was that the jersey fabric had no stretch in this direction.  However I managed to make it work; the bands fit nicely over my wrist but don’t contract snugly over my arms like a stretch would, c’est la vie…
The scarf is merely a strip of leftover fabric from my greige top with half-raglan sleeves, seen worn together like this it can be seen the new pants are going to be a perfect match for that top… yay for mono-tonal dressing!  According to my latest Vogue, mono-tonal is in in in!!  Along with the sailor-striped top… nice to know I’m looking sort of  “in” when just doing the housework, no?!
The socks are handknit by me also…
In blogger news, Trudy, of Sewing with Trudy, has awarded me with a Beautiful Blogger award, thankyou so much Trudy! Trudy always takes the time to leave a kind and thoughtful comment on my blog, and she has been so sweet and supportive of me!  I have received this award before so I am, however, thinking of you when I say I won’t try to think of yet another ten things about me (truly I’m not very interesting!), but if you wish to read the 10 things I wrote about before then you can click on the Beautiful Blogger button in my sidebar.

Beautiful blogger award

I was so thrilled to look in my comments and see an award from the lovely Anne; thanks so much Anne!
Whooo, now I have to list ten things about myself…  I always find this so difficult because I’m not very interesting… and this is meant to be primarily a sewing blog and not supposed to be about me.
What to say?
1. I’ve been sewing for over 30 years.  And I still love it!
2. I love “Desperate Housewives”  ;D!!  But loathe Sex and the City  :S Not even the wardrobe can hold my attention on the latter…

3. The British band Muse is my current favourite music.  (I”m not crazy about the clip but trust me the music is awesome…)

4. We lived in the United States for a year.  It was an interesting education.  USA is so different from Australia.  We made some great friends!

5. Typical Hollywood blockbusters bore me.  I love quirky foreign films with a twisted unexpected storyline.  The Sixth Sense is that rare Hollywood film that hit the jackpot for me.  One of my all time favourites.

Phew, ten things is a lot to think up…
6. I’m addicted to fabric.  It’s terrible.  Even though I might have 1000m of fabric stuffed into my laundry cupboard so I can’t shut the door, I still kid myself I will have time for just one more sewing project…  Crazy.

7. Knitting socks is another “what am I thinking?” secret addiction.  I’m not sure I could ever buy another pair of socks… well, one must have something to do whilst sitting in front of the TV of an evening, no?

8. I secretly wish my kids would never grow up and leave home.  I would miss them horribly.

(at right, my children and me in Italy)

9. (also related to the above picture)  I wish I could learn another language.  I learnt Italian at school.  Over the years, and having no Italians to converse with, I completely forgot it all, or so I thought.  When we visited Italy a few years ago I was amazed at how much I understood of conversations around me, and how the right phrases popped into my head when I needed them…!
10. I know I said this in my last award, but it’s such a big thing about me I’ll say it again.  I am extremely shy.  If you met me I’d be so tongue-tied you’d think I was a stuck-up snob.  I’m not really.

Now I name five others to award to.  It’s difficult to pick just five out of the many fabulous blogs I enjoy reading, but I’m awarding to:

Faye, of Faye’s Sewing Adventure

Karin, of ancien-nouveau

Lily, of The House of Mirth

Stephanie, of The Naked Seamstress

Caroline, of Church Sexy

Sunshine award

Despite my despondency yesterday (hey, a girl is entitled to an off day every once in a while, right?  We’ve all been there…) I managed to achieve quite a lot by way of cleaning up.  I’ve shifted a small mountain of laundry from off my laundry floor.  There are now “piles” of debris around the backyard, as opposed to a general blanket coverage.  I’ve broken down some big branches into much smaller manageable sizes.  The glass man is expected.  Broken glass has been dealt with.  The pool is getting there…  er, sort of…
And I’m feeling a lot more positive and sunshine-y today.  So it seems an appropriate day to do this!

Faye very kindly nominated me for this sunshine award, which was so sweet of her and I was thrilled and honoured to receive it.  Thanks, Faye!

The requirements for the award are very simple, and are as follows:

1. Place the logo within your blog or post.
2. Pass the award on to 12 bloggers.
3. Link the nominees within the post.
4. Let the nominees know they have received the award by commenting on their blogs.
5. Share the love and link to the person from whom you received the award.

I’m following Faye’s lead and nominating 6 fellow bloggers for this award.  These are 6 ladies who I find to be wonderfully skilled at combining beauty and functionality in their sewing achievements, and to be proud to wear and show off their creations on their blog in order to inspire us all.

Lauriana, who continues to amaze with her exceptional precision tailoring and cool classic dressing style

Ruta, who is so stylish and clever with her approach to her whole wardrobe…

Yoshimi, who creates stunning and beautiful garments worthy of the chicest and most exclusive boutiques.  Her latest jeans creation is to die for…

Trudy, who not only is a most inspirational mother, creative artist and a very sweet lady who always leaves such uplifting comments to definitely brighten my day, but also finds time somehow to sew lovely garments

Ann, another lovely sweet lady who always adds a bit of sunshine to my day with her supportive comments.  A very clever seamstress who made stunning jeans for herself (jaw drops in admiration…)

Caroline, who writes in an entertaining and witty way about her adventures with her wardrobe and her life

Kreativ Blogger Award

Thankyou so much Yoshimi for giving me this Kreativ Blogger Award!  So today instead of my usual sewing and fashion post ( I did have something planned , but I’ll do it tomorrow) I’ll try to dredge up 7 things about myself…hmm this will be tricky as I’m not particularly interesting…
1. I have a degree in chemistry.  I started out studying veterinary science, but my brain is mathematically wired (plus being an animal lover, this made some of the assignments we were given in veterinary science traumatic for me) and I switched over.  I’m ideally suited to being tucked away alone in a laboratory, not talking to anyone, working on a problem, which is not unlike when I’m sewing actually!
2. I’m painfully shy, and when people first meet me I come across as aloof and stuck-up.  I’m not really.  If I have a drink I turn into a garrulous party animal, embarrassingly.
3. I have a crazy obsession about not using my car as much as possible.  I think my friends think I’m insane when I rock up at a swish cafe, on my bike, with my fancy shoes stashed in the basket.
4. Our household has four pets.  And three teenagers.  Yes, we live in a menagerie.

5.  I’m very sentimental about trees and get very upset when old ones are cut down.  Yeah, bit of a hippy aesthetic there.  Probably why so many of my photos have a tree, or at least some sort of greenery, in there somewhere…!

6. Unlike just about everybody else in the world, I can’t bear the smell and taste of coffee.  Actually the smell I can cope with, just.  Once I tried to force myself to get over this and drink the stuff, be an adult, for heaven’s sake.  Then my friend A pointed out, why take on an unhealthy habit unnecessarily?  Yeah, she had a point.  So I abstain.

I consider this to be a useful dye, rather than a consumable…

7. Hmm, struggling to think of anything else about myself not too personal or weird here….
I saw snow for the first time in my life when I was 27.  Well, I do live in one of the hottest and driest states of one of the hottest and driest countries on Earth, and Perth is possibly the most isolated capital city in the world.  When I was growing up we didn’t travel much.  As children, my friends and I considered we were going overseas when we went to Rottnest Island (small island about 10km away from Perth).  Maybe this is why Aussies have that wanderlust to the nth degree and as adults we all aim to travel.  A lot.  My husband and I love travelling.  Since reading “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” I really want to go to Scandinavia.

Now, the rules are that I should nominate 7 people, but I’m going to take a leaf out of Yoshimi’s book and just name 3.

So, the very creative people who get my award are;

Lauriana; whose tailoring skills are faultless, I would love to see her outfits every day!

Stephanie, who is a very talented lady who can make her own leather bags!  as well as lovely clothes; I’m so impressed by this I can’t begin to express my admiration……

Ruta, another gorgeous creative lady who along with stunning clothes also makes her own bags, and leather skirts, again, very impressed…

I would add the very creative Lily, but she just did something similar recently; and I also went to Trudy and Ann, but they both had this award already…

The Rules
1. Copy/paste the Kreativ Blogger Award picture onto your blog
2. Thank the person who awarded it to you and post a link to her/his blog
3. Write 7 things about yourself we might not know
4. Choose 7 other bloggers to award
5. Link to them
6. Notify your 7 bloggers of their award
