Domestic diva

Should one make the effort to look stylish when one’s daily schedule involves simply popping into the supermarket, the post office and the bank?  Or if one’s place of work is in the home?  After all, if the peeps around you are in their tracky dacks and ugg boots the pressure is on to follow suit, and if you’ve gone to the effort to dress up kinda nice then you run the risk of feeling overdressed and flashy when all about are very casz…
Well, I reckon all power to the thoughtful dresser.  I feel better within myself if I look like I cared… so I do make an effort.
Having said that I’m not super dressed up here, but just a bit.  This is a very simple dress (sometimes the simplest will be the most worn item in one’s wardrobe!) that is not gorgeous, but handy.  I’ve found it to be a very versatile garment; to see how I styled it in six different way, see here.  Oh, and I know I wore this cardigan only the other day, but I’m loving its drab blue sooooo much, could be grabbing it everyday if I wasn’t trying to mix it up more… and it went so well with the socks I had on I just had to put it back on again for today.  I’m really making an effort to rotate through my wardrobe, but some things are proving handy and comfortable and fit in so well with my style thoughts for that day… so here it is again.  And the new shoes.  Wearing them in.  Love them so much…

  1. I just came cross your blog while browsing and I just love it especially your writing. Your work are amazing. I Like six different style. I'm inspired.

  2. That is one versatile dress! I love how you get so much mileage out of it. Since you really like versatile, have you seen http://www.theuniformproject.com/#!pilots. That dress gets some major mileage!

I'm usually better dressed than my coworkers and friends. It's kind of my "thing". After all, I figure if I wanted to look like the herd, I probably wouldn't sew. I'd just pop in at the mall and buy whatever everyone else is wearing (ugh!!). I find that "dressing up" makes me feel better: stylish and more confident. And for me, that's the whole point of clothes. (I'm preaching to the choir here, I know. You're always stylish!)

  3. I love your simple dress. I think it's important to always look nice no matter where we go, to add beauty to our surroundings, to give others something lovely to look at and to think about, and feel good about ourselves; and I don't feel we must be dressed to nines when doing so, just putting forth a little bit of extra effort, a nice accessory even, like a cute scarf or belt. I've been taking my kids to neighborhood pool this summer and always wear a fabulous hat and sunglasses with my suit. I arrive with a nice coverup and cute shoes and pool bag as well. I love to feel glamourous, like a movie star or model. And trust me, I am not really dressed up, just a few nice accessories. It makes all the difference.

By the way, you always look fabulous. Don't stop.

  4. The dress looks like something everyone should have in the wardrobe. I love the neckline! and I love your "six ways" posts, — gives me alot of food for thought. 🙂

This is one of my favorite shades of blue too. I fancy it matches my eyes when I wear it, like a stormy day when the storm hasn't quite broken yet …

Well, you know me and getting dressed up to work at home. I do feel better, Kevin is happier, Gideon sometimes says "wow, mommy you look pretty!" and I feel more confident when I am popping into the supermarket, and people respond to you differently – whether it is the dress or the confidence it inspires which leads to that, I don't know.

Of course, now if I dress I can do a blog post! Yippee! Especially since my sewing output right now wouldn't lead to a blog post very often.

Have a great day! (or I guess night in Australia …)

  5. Carolyn, I feel so inadequate. I've just come back from the shops in my gym gear, greasy hair and sweaty!! Perth must be warmer than Sydney right now. Can't wait to put on some white linen.

  6. Not sure if I commented here before; your blog – and work – is very inspiring! But I have to comment on this outfit; it may be my favorite "casual" outfit I've seen all year. I looove the petticoat with linen dress with socks and shoes with cardigan. Sensible-yet-romantic-yet-practical. Perfect!
