Downgrading a “good” dress

Does anyone else downgrade their dresses?  Move the snazzies out of category “with heels and make-up only” and over to “OK to walk the dog in”?
Last year this dress was a “good” dress.  I wore it to lots of formal lunches, parties and end-of-year functions, as well as a wedding (and this dress for the reception dinner and dance afterwards)  And this year I’ve made a few new party numbers to see me out for the seasonal social whirl… but I still love this dress and want to give it an outing once in a while… well, how could I not love it; it’s lace!
Luckily it’s quite subdued in colour and style and not overly sparkly or glamourous, so I’ve delegated it duty as a nice-ish everyday dress, just to wear out and about.  In its early life as a party dress, I went through the ritual of the “gently swooshing by hand in a bucket” cleaning routine.  Then started tossing it in a lingerie bag in with other delicates… then eventually, throwing caution to the winds, sans lingerie bag and just in with the general light clothes.  The first time I dared to do this I worried how the gathered silk chiffon midriff and sash would hold up…  but it survived that test and actually stood up pretty good.  So I reckon it can thankfully shed the lace-and-silk-diva label and has earned its place in amongst the daily players.
Oh, and the heels aren’t just for show; although I did wear thongs (flipflops) for walking the dog, here I was on my way to morning tea with the Monday gals… just thought I’d point that out after my post on “honest blogging” the other day…!

  1. Great downgrade – so pretty … anyway – I just sent a reply to your email – of course it was a "no Reply" so here it is ….Yeah – we had a mob of kids wandering around – my husband gave them some lollies – but I wish he hadn’t ….. it’s just wrong! My friend in Brisbane had her house “egged” – no one home – and have you seen the crap they sell in the shops for costumes? The thing is – year by year – it will get bigger and bigger – my Brissy friend says to bring back “Cracker Night” it just has to be safer!

  2. Olá Caroly, seu vestido é delicado e belo, e se encaixa perfeitamente no uso diário, Parabéns.

  3. This is such a pretty dress. Why wear daggy clothes to walk the dog when you can look like this?
I love to downgrade an outfit – it gets so much more wear for me in the second rank! It is also a very good excuse to make new fancy outfits.

  4. It is really important to WEAR your clothes, rather than save them all for special occasions. I once downgraded a bias cut silk dress from cocktail frock to swimsuit coverup.

  5. He he, If you had posed in your heels on the sand, I would have had a good chuckle, "surely she isn't strolling on the beach in heels …" can you imagine more inappropriate footwear?

This dress is beautiful and feminine, glad you can wash it! And wear it more often!

  6. Most of my clothes are downgrades I've rescued from someone else and cared for and ironed and dressed up again.

I love the idea of this dress downgraded…perhaps with different shoes.

  7. So pretty! The color is neutral enough that you can get away with wearing it during the day. I have a black lace dress that's quite similar, but I don't think it could convert to day time wear b/c of the color. But you're giving me ideas… maybe I could top it with a merino cardi for office holiday parties, etc. Anywho, looks like a beautiful Monday down in Oz! Monday tea sounds wonderful.

  8. This is probably one of my favourites that you've made/shown. I LOVE IT. I love the colours, style, sash. Serioulsy, beautiful. 🙂
And don't worry, I knew you weren't talking about me… (or my bogan friends teeheehee).
YAY it's a public holiday here. Not that it means much… just means that hubby is home. 😀 (not into horse racing.)
