Short and sweet; I made a hat!! Well, by “made”; more accurately; I compiled a hat. I bunged a whole lot of pretty things onto a hat. Oh I did make that little tea cup, so I guess I can lay claim to a little bit of it….
The green felt hat is a “St Patrick’s Day” hat from Spotlight and all the fake roses and ivy are also from Spotlight. I made the little tea cup from modelling clay, also originally from Spotlight, and painted it using craft paints from… guess where?!! I used green Gutermann’s upholstery thread to stitch everything securely to the hat.

So my 3 nieces/Cassie’s bridesmaids had planned her kitchen tea/bridal shower to be a Mad Hatter’s Tea party, and we all had to wear some sort of over-the-top headgear. I wasn’t quite sure how crazy to go, and genuinely thought my hat was going to be TOO much, but it ended up being quite subdued by comparison to many of the other fabulously lovely creations at the party!
The theme of the part was a surprise for Cassie, and the girls had made her hat for her, to both match hers and to be bridal at the same time. Aren’t they the most gorgeous bunch of girls?!!

We had a low-key hat competition at the end, and Cassie won of course. The funniest thing of all was the prize; a roll of toilet paper! We all roared with laughter!

Let me explain… with the new corona virus scare currently going on; Australians have reacted predictably, by cleaning out the shops of any and all supplies of toilet paper. I know, right? So Australian… Seriously, the toilet roll shelves are empty, all of the time. You have to get in fast to pick up one of the occasional restocks when they happen! and there are even rumours of people selling vastly inflated toilet paper on eBay. I haven’t seen any ads myself, but that’s just an indication of the general level of panic. And so normally, one of the games you’d have at a bridal shower is a toilet roll wedding dress competition. And such a thing was obviously out of the question with the current toilet roll situation. So my sister-in-law spared one toilet roll – ONE! which was awarded as first prize for the hat comp. SO FUNNY!
Here are some of the other gorgeous hats at the party:
Mum made her stunning colourful hat of felt lined with old X-ray film…

Cassie’s friend E cleverly made a very chic and sculptural, royal hat/ruffled collar ensemble, using paper:

L looked super pretty in her floral/gumnut hat…

Arthur very briefly wore his yoda beanie; but he’s not a fan, poor little lad! A man of discerning fashion taste!

Lots of gorgeous hats!!!

In closing; a few in-progress shots of making my hat… just because well, that’s what I do here.

I made four button-like holes in the bottom of the tea cup to make it easy to stitch onto the hat. In fact, you could just think of it as a glorified button, to be honest!

Coming up soon… the wedding itself!!!!! #eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkk!!!!!!!!

Looks like you had a great time all together! Making sewing holes in the bottom of the tea cup is such a clever idea. Your hat is gorgeous!
Wishing Cassie and her fiancé a wonderful wedding!

I couldn’t believe that you have a problem with the toilet paper in Australia, too. Guess what is completely sold out here…!
Toilet paper is in very short, but obtainable supply here in the US.. Definitely a run on it, but it the hand sanitizer is impossible to get
Lovely hats by such creative people. Gives one hope. On the other hand, what does this concern with running out of toilet paper, of all things, say about us?! I really can’t figure it out….
Great hats! It sounds like a lovely afternoon. The toilet paper thing made me laugh. Toilet paper is a hot commodity along with hand sanitizer in New Zealand as well. The silly thing is it is one of the few things we still manufacture!
Love the hats. What a great theme for a shower! I guess we are lucky here in my little corner of the States. I haven’t seen a dent in the toilet paper supply, and every shop I go to has buckets of hand sanitizer at every checkout. We just got the first 3 cases up on the North Coast of Ohio.
Gorgeous hat! And the toilet roll panic is not just an Aussie thing it’s happening here in UK, along with dried pasta!! Maybe people are going to construct barricades or could it be that holding one of these items to your nose wards off the corona virus?
Georgeous hats. Sophie (?) seemed to like it too. As far as I know toilet paper is not yet scarce in Switzerland. But we also have people buying up pasta and other long lasting food stuffs. And of course masks and hand sanitizers are scarce. People apparently have filled up their dispensers from hospital ones. All the best to Cassie, her fiancé and all your family for the upcoming wedding. I hope all goes well. Best regards from a rainy Basel Anita
Same here in Northern Ireland…… have I missed something that people are planning on EATING the stuff lol…… fabulous hats and party, looks like you know how to have a fun time despite the doom and gloom!!!
They all look stunning! What a creative group of women you are. It looks like you had a wonderful time. The toilet paper madness is happening here too, I went shopping yesterday and there wasn’t any, the assistant told me it was sold out by 10am two days running with people unloading the pallets before they got to the shelves. We have a few rolls left, I don’t get it as the virus is respiratory and not a stomach bug. Take care and maybe sew some toilet rags ha, ha. x
What a great idea for a bridal shower, so original. Love everyone’s hats.
Canada too has no toilet paper to be found! Also no hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol of any concentration, pasta, rice, flour, canned anything. And the the silliest part is we don’t have the virus in my community. At present the closet location is 4-5 hour drive away. I don’t get it.
Oh, Sweden calling, and we too have people buying all the toilet paper, pasta, hand sanitizer, and any kind of mask to put over your face. In the builders’ shop (don’t know the word; where you buy planks, paint, screws etc) all the dust masks were sold out twice in a week, bought by the same person.
I had a good laugh at the toilet roll prize! Such a wonderful afternoon with creative ladies, and I absolutely love all your hats. Looking forward to reading about the wedding later on. No doubt an even lovelier day!
Brilliant idea for the tea cup, I was wondering how you attached it.
I just came back from Bali and yes, I brought back half a dozen rolls of loo paper! It’s getting quite silly now.
Thanks for a great post to take my mind off it all.
When I found you your youngest child was just leaving school it was a post about cushions that’s what I remember
I’ve learned from, reflected on, and admired so many posts since then. I’ve explored fabric districts and stretched and challenged myself because I see you didn’t achieve your amazing abilities over night and I won’t get better if I don’t try and try and try again
I really hope despite this blight your daughter finds a path to celebrate her wedding and we get to see the fruits of your labours.
This garden tea party hat is so charming and stylish!
