Big baggy pockets…

… with bonus skirt.
It is an unusual skirt, admittedly.  That’s OK.  One description could focus on the fact that it is softly creamy in shade, ever-so-slightly crinkly in texture, interestingly layered in construction, and easily breezily comfortably summery as a whole.  Another could point out that it is made of flippin’ curtaining off-cuts for crying out loud, and features ginormous flappy saddlebag things.  Well let’s not over-romanticise, hmmm?  But I like it, nonetheless.  And I don’t mind curtaining fabric; in fact, one of my most useful and reliable favourites is another curtaining skirt..
I started out with Vogue 8363, a plain, waist-banded pencil skirt with simple variations; and altered it to make it a bit more A-line, cutting the side edges like so; both front and back.  And then added my little added designer-y flight of fancy in the form of those big wrap-around bags.

They are basically sacks; like envelopes or pillowslips, that are sewn within long long extensions of the narrow waistband.  These cross over at the centre back, wrap around my hips and tie loosely at the front.  The skirt closure is the regular kind, by invisible zip in the centre back seam.
I was inspired by this skirt.  Does anyone else have a go at actually doing something with their pins?  I have pinned LOTS of things, but have only followed through on nutting out making a few.  I have big BIG plans for making tonnes of things from my random unbridled pinnings; but the same ol’ story; so much inspiration, so little time.  And there’s only so many clothes that one can in all good conscience add to one’s wardrobe.  Striking a balance is key, my friends, striking a balance.  However I do feel pretty good about this particular skirt since it’s pretty much a freebie; made from the off-cuts of Cassie’s curtains.  I’d found the absolutely perfect thick calico curtains on super special in Spotlight.  Correction; the fabric was perfect but the top had been made as pencil pleat curtains, which I loathe and detest with a fiery passion.  So I bought them too long and cut off the tops, keeping the hemline intact, and re-sewed the top edge with my preferred triple pleat curtain tape, so they match nearly all the other curtains I’ve made for our house.  And was rewarded with a few pieces of leftover fabric… which I have now put to good use  😉  Double, no… triple win!

40 Thoughts on “Big baggy pockets…

  1. Your skirt came out much better than your pinspiration 🙂

  2. I like it! The length is spot on. I don't trial many of my pins or likes at all, but I generally view it as a way of "having" things that aren't my personal style but that I like all the same. Do you get what I mean? For instance, I have an entire board of tattoos because I love them/looking at them, but don't want to get one myself. It's my little pretend world I suppose… Anyway, your new skirt and styling suit you well, as always. Rachel 🙂

  3. Love the skirt! So inspired. Want to make one like that.
    Ellen 🙂

  4. It`s awesome!

  5. so funny, I love it !

  6. I know you love a pocket but my oh my, those are some pockets. What are you going to keep in them? I am intrigued. Great post and pictures. Jo x

  7. It looks so pretty with those unusual pockets. I love your choice of curtains too. Genius!

  8. You look amazing in this, and I love the fabric. So jealous – I'd look like a milkmaid!

  9. Interesting skirt and those pockets add a very different feel to an a-line skirt!

  10. New reader here. Came to you via Goodbye Valentino. I LOVE this skirt. The practical side of me wants one, and I would call it the garden skirt. It would be great for carrying tools and fresh veggies from the garden. However, your skirt is truly too lovely for such a utilitarian use.

  11. Those pockets are Wild! and look great on you, as usual.

  12. That is so much fun, Carolyn!

  13. I love this skirt! I have been thinking about making a series of tunics/CWA style aprons and this seems to kinda fit with my idea – so I might mentally pin it. I rarely use my pins… except we are going thru some shenanigans with architects at the moment and they suggested we pin stuff that we like so they could get a feel for our taste.

  14. At first I wasn't sure…the skirt with the big pockets looks cute on you, but I couldn't wear it. Then I kept scrolling back to look at it again. Pockets are in…big pockets…and they are fun!!! I have Marcy Tilton's dress pattern with the big pockets. Not as cute as your skirt, but…I could make it for spring. Yes. 🙂
Please don't worry about adding too much to your wardrobe! What you sew inspires the rest of us and it would be sad if you stopped.

  15. I'm too much of a klutz to be running around with such large pockets. I'd catch them on everything I walked past, but as far as the design goes, I like the look of them.

  16. I love what you did with curtains! Much more interesting and fashionable than the curtain outfits on Sound of Music. 🙂 The top is lovely as well, I like the really drapey collar in the front AND the back. Most cowl type necks are only in the front, but this lets you look ace coming and going. Nice!

  17. Different and very practical! Sort of reminds me of a Donna Karan Vogue from a few years ago but that was a dress. Yours is more wearable. Lovely.

  18. It suits you so much – not making fun, but it would be fab as a gardening harvest skirt in a darker fabric. I'm forever using my skirt or tshirt to hold tomatos, beans etc! 🙂

  19. Awesome skirt! I could never wear things like that because of my wide hips…but it suits you very well!

  20. Love, love your skirt with baggy pockets! Yours turned out more lovely than what you pinned for inspiration. Umm, you asked the question 'if any of us actually make what we pin' – and I have to confess, when needing a pocket inspiration for a poncho I recently made, I remembered you pin so many lovely 'detail' photos; I went to your board and found the perfect pocket for my poncho! 🙂 Thank you Carolyn! You may not always make what you pin, but you help inspire us!

  21. I love your new skirt! Do you keep doggie treats in them? I'm having a good time thinking of all the things I could put in those wonderful pockets.

  22. Hmm, I like the pocket potential but I'm not sure about it…. It's definitely an interesting and eye-catching outfit.
I have used several of my pins for projects. My favorite is when I find pins of some creation I've just made. Then I run cheering around the house flashing my computer cheering, "My style isn't weird! See it's on Pinterest!" My Dad is not amused. 🙂
Things got a bit crazy over there with the stash busting boards and now I have way more than I'll ever use…

  23. Wow, that's definitely an interesting design – it's so you! I could never wear something like that, I'm not slim enough nor tall enough to carry it off but it looks great on you. I do pin things but as yet haven't made anything from them – maybe soon tho' 🙂

  24. I think you did a bunch more wearable piece than the pin that you pinned. I love it! Those big pockets look so fun and useful. 🙂 I have made myself a goal of doing at least one Pinterest inspired project a month this year. So far, so good.

  25. Definitely enjoy the first description LOL You can romanticize pretty much anything with the right marketing tools! Besides, with those pockets, you don't need a purse, which leaves your hands free for much more useful things ^__^ Kidding of course, but I love how you capture a great idea and make it wearable and stylish – on the wrong person it could easily become silly, but you've definitely pulled it off!! I also very much like your puppy accessorizing – what a sweet lovely cutie pie!! 🙂

  26. Stunning! Was just told about your blog in the comments on my blog!

  27. Great skirt! I'm thinking along the lines of Fabric Tragic – I would love a skirt like it so I could stick my son's little dogs in the pockets when they get too tired to keep walking with me. Trying to picture Serena just stopping and refusing to walk any farther, but can't. She is always a trooper in your photo shoots.

  28. I love the idea of sewing with curtains! I especially love the muslin lining I find inside heavy patterned curtains at thrift shops. I have an ancient white linen tablecloth set aside to make a shirt one day. Iwonder how your pockets would look in something sheer? It might render them less attractive when used to hold things, but I think the contrast of opaque and sheer would be interesting.

  29. The first photo is so beautiful! And those huge pockets! I really need those!! Good job on this one!

  30. Makes me want to go apple picking 🙂

  31. This is blowing my mind! Those pockets… There are no words but AWESOME! 😀

  32. This is awesome! Perfect combination of cute as pie and practical!
