Hello! I’ve made a new pair of um, “shoes”…?? although I’m embarrassed to even consider giving them that lofty title; they’re so basic. Also; yes I know my year of handmade is all but over and I don’t have to make any more footwear, but I just can’t help myself! I’ve even got some OTHER new shoes in the works too! 😀

I’d bought a sheet of this foam from Clark Rubber; it’s matting designed to slot together to make a kiddies’ playmat or shock absorbent flooring for gyms. My straps are red corduroy, the same fabric I used for a previous pair of long-gone sneakers. I made the hole in the foam with a sharp pencil, which I also used to push the straps through said hold. The straps ends are sewn securely to a piece of linen that will be glued between the top and bottom layers. Liquid nails was deployed.

The bottom layer is thin cork-covered, contact paper, cut to size, stuck on – more liquid nails, yo!! and then three layers of clear, enamel varnish to seal and strengthen.
aaaaand, done!

random outfit shot intended to feature the thongs and they’re barely visible, ha!
location; Eagle Bay, Western Australia

Your thongs are great! Who doesn’t love a pair of red shoes too! I had to click on your lovely dress again. You make so many things that it’s nice that you have links back to them. I’m definitely saving this post. I think it may be possible that I could actually try making thongs for myself!! This would be a fun summer project for me and my girls.
Another pair of cute thongs! How interesting is it how to sew the straps on. Your blue linnen dresses are beautiful. I love your fotos at Eagle Bay (this morning we have had rime again but there is a hint of spring)!
so good idea !! It’s very funny and nice !
Irrepressible, you are! Nice flipflops with Liquid Nails closeups! Also enjoyed the link to the hand dyed linen dress I had almost forgotten about. A success, on many levels.
I’ve got a puzzle for you, since you’re aces on those. If there’s anyone with the resourcefulness to crack this nut, you’re it.
You make loads of interesting, stylish warm weather clothing. It’s inspiration for all our casual wear and smart-casual office wear projects. But there are times when something different is called for.
In my view, clothing designers and makers haven’t yet nailed the kinds of clothing that protect skin from sun stylishly, conveniently, coolingly. They’ve approached it as technical gear for jogger (?), rather than a new streetwear design opportunity.
I’ve tried “solar sleeves” and UV shirts for golf, but in spite of high prices they haven’t really impressed me so far. They also don’t address the throat or legs adequately.
Sunscreen lotions are sometimes not enough, or they irritate the skin, discolor clothing, etc. There’s a real need for physical barriers. Textiles.
Is it really impossible to design stylish pieces? Entire garments? Or, accessories that are easy to clip on/off as the day progresses? Travelers, outdoor event spectators, sailors, beachcombers, golfers, gardeners, children, dog walkers, people on medications that sensitize skin to sun….. all need help. For legs, arms, hands, neck/throat, when it’s hot.
I could see myself in a golf shirt or blouse with matching removable sleeves that cover up to the knuckles (thumb holes or some other design). I’d love leggings/high sox that are designed to look cool and feel cool under skirts and shorts. A modern shrug to slip over a sleeveless top. A dickie, for the decolletage.
You may already have better options in Australia than we do. Is all sun gear destined to look dorky, or could creative home sewists innovate here?

Stellar!!! (apparently I need 15 characters minimum to comment) So again, Stellar!!!
Great outfit head to toes!
They look wonderful!
It is just amazing that you can make your own footwear. Your thongs are beautiful!
Another great pair! I love your whole outfit.
So the sandwiched layer of the sole matches your dress? 😀 That is really something! The thongs look sturdy and professional and I really like the dress 🙂
I love the fact that you find shoe making materials everywhere! These are totally great and, even after your challenge is over, I know you’ll keep wearing them.
These are brilliant, you’re so clever! I’d love to have a go at making some espadrilles this summer, but using one of those kits with the soles. Your photos are always so lovely too!
These are fantastic, and such a clever way to put them together. This is so far advanced from the garden kneeling mat covered in duct tape variety! Great job! I love these shoes!
Love them and I did have a double take at your title when it hit my inbox for the tinniest of seconds. I also use those mats as a board to block my knitted garments.
