Summer armour II

Who said I’m a colourless dresser?  Sometimes I do don brights.  And when one has made the decision to go cheerful, well one may as well go overboard, no?  Well, to fully compensate for all the neutral days in between, that is.   As in, when I cast my eye back over the days here in which I have made the effort to take a photo they roll past neutral, colourless, quietly tasteful, a bit dull, then all of a sudden, whammy!  A bright day.  So today is one of those days.  A makeup day.
Did some more final Christmas shopping today.  You know, you think you’ve finished, a full range of prezzies for all in our fambly’s lives has been purchased and/or made and tucked away in secret hiding places about the house… then all of a sudden you remember some more people.  You know, peripheral people, that are not a huge part, but still there, and you would feel bad if you didn’t get them a little something.  So off I toddled, back to the shoppies yet again, and braved the crowds.  Although the crowds were still orderly and manageable.   I didn’t come home exhausted and barely able to cope with taking my shoes off before collapsing on the sofa, a usual symptom of Christmas shopping…  so I guess dressing to boost my self-confidence must be working some!  Right?
Now today is my husband’s birthday.  So we are having a quiet family celebration this evening and I am baking a decadently rich and stodgy chocolate cake for afters… just because we, er, haven’t been having enough chocolate in our lives lately?
Haha.

Wicked mask

Last night we attended a masquerade Christmas cocktail function, and I needed a mask, so I visited Spotlight and picked up some basics to decorate one.
Boy, was this fun…  I felt like I was in kindergarten all over again!  Glueing stuff on and sprinkling sparkle dust is a heaps therapeutic way to spend and hour or so; so I do recommend this!  Oh, I miss when the kiddies were little and I had a legitimate excuse to indulge in this kind of activity…  now they’re all grown up one needs a Good Reason to get out sparkle dust…   luckily this was it.
So I purchased two small packets of feathers and two masks; one gold and one plain white plastic, and put together some other bits and bobs I had already.
I didn’t have a firm plan but just gathered lots of stuff together to play with.  Some black lace, black net, some scraps of sequinned fabric, glue and sparkles…  I did get out some old stamps and a stamp pad, but ultimately didn’t use these as the ink wouldn’t “set” on the plastic and just smeared off…

I bought two masks because the ones in Spotlight were so flimsy I worried that they would crack or split too easily… and glued them together for a firm base to play on.  (I almost typed in “work with” there but then got real, hey, “playing” is a far more appropriate verb, methinks!)

Then just started glueing…  I only used a tiny fraction of the feathers I bought and there is heaps left over for some other project…

Once I had enough fluffiness I cut out a lace motif and glued it over the top of the gluey ugly bit where all the feather shafts were showing.
Dabbed glue and sparkle gel on and around about in a random artistic way, and sprinkled wicked green dust over…

I later added a bit more black net over the nose region, sliding it carefully underneath the feather and lace.  Would have been better to have thought of this in the early stages, but meh, got it in there OK.
Also later noticed a bit of white from the under-mask showing, so I used a Sharpie to draw in “eyeliner” around the eyes, both to colour in over the white, and to add a bit more drama.
Voila!
Here are the masks we wore; the one on the right was made by my son a while ago, and worn by my husband.  Needless to say, the ladies’ masks were all tres glamourous at the event, and most of  the mens’ were plain and rather sober.  Well, this is Australia.  Generally speaking Aussie men struggle with the concept of sparkles.

Eating humble pie…

Yah, OK, so I went to the vintage fair.  And it was pretty cool.
What can I say, the last post I wrote I was still feeling grumpy and unsociable, heat waves have that effect on me.  Sunday brought a breeze and a divinely cool change; refreshing and invigorating to mind, body and spirit, so we felt inclined to get off our butts and DO SOMETHING!!  yeah!  As our Canadian friends here say, get yerselves oot and aboot!
So I enjoyed it.
One thing I found interesting on browsing and checking out the inside of garments is how a lot of “real” vintage evening wear  from the late 40’s and early 50’s was made of nylon, rayon, polyester etc, as at the time these were often considered superior to natural fibres.  An interestingly different view to the one we hold now… And how horrible the zips often are in these garments, big and clunky and obvious.  Ahhh, the blessings of the modern invisible zip.  We’ve come a long way in some areas, that’s for sure.
I got a Glomesh bag!  I do have one already that my parents gave me for a birthday present, sometime in my teen years when you could actually buy them new, hmmm, showing my age there!  My original one is beige, and in perfect condition, of course!  The one I picked up yesterday is a teensy bit tarnished, but in pretty good nick overall, and anyhow, I really wanted a gold one.  I also bought a set of cake forks, which we needed, for only a dollar more than an almost identical set I bought a few months ago in a real op shop; and this great Charles and Di Wedding commemorative mug.  My husband didn’t “get” this last purchase, cries of omg, Carolyn, how tacky can you get?!!, but hey, I think enough time has passed that this sort of memorabilia is no longer tacky tacky but an interesting relic and symbolic to all of us of… something indefinably 80’s…  anyway I can see the irony.  And I’m looking forward to people’s reaction when I serve them a cuppa in this…

Chain and tassel necklace; a tutorial

As soon as I saw it I loved this chain and tassel accessory made by the enormously creative and beautiful Maegan, who in turn was inspired by a Blugirl original, and I wanted to have a go at making my own…  Maegan made hers as a lariat, which would be a much more versatile accessory; but I made mine as a fixed necklace. This is because I knew in my lifestyle a lariat would probably end up either tripping me up, strangling me, or slipping off entirely without my noticing…
so I bought 2 packs of 1m (40 inches) of gold chain and two black upholstery tassels, medium size.  I already had some 10mm jump rings and a necklace hook and loop.  If you are at all into making your own accessories like this it is very handy to also have some pliers and a wire cutter small enough to work with these little fiddly bits.

The chains I bought conveniently had jumps rings attached to each end already, so I just used one of these to join them together to make one long 2m (80inches) chain.

Arrange the chain to your satisfaction.  I went with three loops around the neck and left the ends hanging down in uneven lengths.

At the back of the neck, find the three links that are as close to centre back as possible and string a bit of scrap yarn through them all. Tie this in a loose knot.

Laying the chain down on a flat surface, cut through these three centre back links using wire cutters.

Loop the two jump rings through all three chains, and add the hook and loop closure.

Prise open the last ring on each chain end and thread onto it the top loop of the tassel, close the ring securely.

Use a wool needle to pull the top loop of the tassel back through the “top-knot” and out into the middle of the fringe-y bits, to hide it inside.

It can be worn with the ends hanging down loose or loosely tied up which is less swing-ey and sway-ey when you walk about as briskly as I do.  But I think I like it hanging loose better.  What do you think?

Me and the best friend

Nice to be back here with my big furry best friend again …
On our last lovely balmy evening in Melbourne we met friends for dinner down by the Yarra River and chinwagged into the late late hours.  Our friends had been reading the latest Stephen Hawking book The Grand Design, explaining further the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, and posing discussions such as “why is there something rather than nothing?” and “why do we exist?” and other esoteric fare…
I decided to keep quiet about the fact that my current reading material is the Sookie Stackhouse Chronicles, a decidedly more lowbrow offering…  This is a sometimes camp series about a Louisiana waitress who is a psychic and is also dating a vampire; lol!  Yeah, I do read worthy books (really!), but also I like to escape now and then into black humour and small-town soapie-style fun too…  life is too short to stick exclusively with serious.
Y’all agreed?  Darn tootin’…

Casino Royale party, with DIY necklace

Remember back in April I went to a fashion parade and mentioned a stunningly over-the-top necklace?  I had initially thought of a DIY but my jewellery making skills are not fabulous.  So I went back to the store with some friends a while back and had a closer look at the necklace; with a vague view of suggesting it to Craig as a future birthday gift and discovered it was a Tom Binn’s design and was selling for $1695, well NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!  With my usual stingeiness selfless concern for the family finances (he he!) I decided to persist with the DIY after all.  And remembered this tutorial by the amazing Maegan, whose blog is heaps inspiring, she is very beautiful, stylish and creative too…  so every time I’ve been to op shops and secondhand stores I’ve checked out the jewellery selection, but I’ve come to the conclusion Australians just do not get rid of half-way nice jewellery at all but only truly junk jewellery…  so eventually I ended up in Diva where I bought five cheap new necklaces, and also supplemented with one I already had.  And here is the result!
Last night Craig and I went to a Casino Royale party and I decided the event was ripe for excessive bling and luxury and wearing the new necklace…   And I love my new necklace and it got lots of compliments!  And I want to work on it some more and make it even more OTT!
Below is the outfit I wore to the party; glam, no?  We certainly had heaps of fun…  All the guys were in tuxedos and all the girls were super blingy and I wasn’t the only one in a fur…  This fur coat was given to me by a friend of my sister-in-law’s who had inherited it from a great aunt and who wanted to get rid of it, can you believe it?!…  I wouldn’t wear new fur, but PETA-supporters rest assured this is a very old fur coat, older than all of us…
This kinda drab black velvet dress I’m wearing?  I did get this in an op shop with a view to altering it but haven’t got around to it yet and this is the “before” look.  It’s on my to-do list…

Hot pink and khaki in the bush…

I knitted this mossy green scarf about eight years ago.  It was a wool kit from Ivy and Maude, composed of an eclectic range of different yarns.  Perfect for keeping the neck warm on a winter weekend away at my parent’s house in the country…
Blog innovation alert!…  Since my husband, who always sources the best gifts ever!, gave me a new camera (thus this blog…) my interest in photography has increased exponentially.  So from now on I’ve decided to put a random picture into my posts of interesting sights that catch my eye that day, to make a hopefully interesting and artistic  addition from the ever-present sewing and fashion pictures… hope you enjoy!  For today it is a picture of my parent’s and their neighbour’s letterboxes.  It tickles me how these rough and rustic boxes are just propped in a haphazard way alongside the road, looking like junk but serving a practical and vital service.

Birthday scarf

Today is my brother’s birthday! 😀 (yay)
Since for Dad’s birthday I made him a scarf I decided to make D one too, so bought 3 balls of this lovely soft Vera Moda yarn and got knitting.  Dad’s scarf was of moss stitch, you may remember my strong opinions about the both sides of scarves looking the same,  :/ , thus ruling out stocking stitch…  this time I went for rib; simply cast on 20 stitches and just carried on until all three balls were knitted.  As it turned out this made for a looooong scarf (approx 5ft long!), no matter; my oldest son thought it was cool, worked out a cool way of arranging it and is modelling it here today (isn’t he handsome?)
I’ve been thinking about Mum’s opinion that D is a Winter and I think she’s right, so this dark dark charcoal I think will look really good on him…
The scarf was supposed to have been ready on Saturday, when we saw the family, but even though I’ve been knitting like a maniac to get it finished it just wasn’t done!  So it’s been popped in the letterbox for when he gets home from work… hopefully a nice surprise!
