This summer’s cocktail dress

Finally decided to post a picture of my new cocktail dress made quite recently.
I love this pattern from Anna Sui for Vogue; I think the ruffles at the back are gorgeous and so feminine.  Sometimes the back of an outfit can be a letdown from the excitement of the front, but this dress is not of that category, in my humble opinion (IMHO, finally worked out this previously baffling acronym the other day!)
I chose this pattern partly because I loved it, also because I wanted the challenge that the pattern cover promised.  I used silk crepe de chine; why oh why do I continue to torture myself with this crazy, slippery, flighty fabric with its willful, wayward mind all of its own?!  Don’t answer that.  Of course I know that it is the challenge that draws me; also silk is truly the king of evening fabrics for both looks and the luxurious feel of it, peerless IMHO (ok, I’ll stop that now).  And actually I’m overdramatising the difficulty factor as usual, I had only a few torturous moments; all to do with the set-in godet in the skirt front.  This whimsical designer touch had to be unpicked and redone once because the fabric kept developing strange inexplicable bumps, probably due to the bias seaming.  Eventually I went with carefully hand basting the seams, and topstitching at a snail’s pace to achieve a smooth enough finish for my satisfaction… Very challenging but not hair-pullingly so.  I am pretty darn proud of the final look.
I also included a photo of my usual method of cutting silk fabric pieces… I cut out the paper pieces, then use my rotary cutter on the fabric.  I hold down the fabric flat with the big see-through ruler seen in the picture (it probably has some proper name).  I use this method because it avoids pins in the fabric, the fabric is held down flat and undisturbed by pin/scissor pulling and tugging which may cause shifting and bunching, and the rotary cutter gives a nice clean cut edge.  I carefully add pattern markings after cutting.  I’d be interested in how other seamstresses handle the slipperiness of silk.
For the shoulder straps I used a chocolate brown sequinned ribbon, and all the edgestitching and topstitching was done in a deep chocolate brown.  I love this contrast, and how it goes with my Icelandic shoes!

Quiet study in neutrals

Today’s outfit is a little drab and neutral, however sometimes one feels like being drab and neutral.  Especially if it’s the last day of one’s holiday (sad face).  One is possibly overusing the impersonal first person pronoun here.  However this is one’s own blog so one shall write however one damn well feels like it, no matter how silly it sounds…
I feel this outfit is nicely complemented by the drab and neutral tones of the tree bark in this photo.  As well as by the rough weathered decking of our beach house.
Please note the floral fabric used as a facing in the skirt; a little secret prettiness known only to me, the wearer.  Sometimes I like to add touches like this; plus this patchwork fabric I used is firm and flat so a better choice for facing than the thicker corduroy fashion fabric, which is a little stretchy too.
Btw, I did a double take when I looked at the photo of my skirt as it looks embarrassingly lopsided.  It’s an optical illusion!  I just measured the skirt and the side seams are exactly the same length, in spite of how it looks in the photo!
Notice the ancient grey cardigan, hiding behind the white blouse out of shame for its general mis-shapen shabbiness.  It’s too awful for its own photo, but still impossible for me to part with this old favourite.  It’s a perfect cardigan for days when I know will be several hours driving with no one to impress but my youngest son and Sienna.

Hot morning in the grasses

Went for a walk this morning along the bike path, past a lake that is a bird sanctuary.  Accordingly Sienna was leashed, something this spoilt pooch is becoming fast unaccustomed to.  She pulled us along like a freight train doing the midnight run!

I made these shorts for this summer, from Burda 7723 out of white linen, with added rear pockets for back view interest.  When a woman reaches a “certain age” one’s rear view unfortunately becomes less than exciting…  I sewed on scraps of fabric leftover from my dress of two days ago, and a sparkly ribbon sewn down randomly across the whole back, plus a tiny knitted square I had hanging around my sewing basket.  No idea what it was doing there, but stuck it on anyway.
Another very hot day in the offing; so will keep things quiet and easy, probably go to the beach and try to meet up with our good friends who are down here also.  Definitely not ruling out a smoothie at Samudra either.  I think fish and chips on the beach might be the order of this evening. Accompanied by a G&T?  Or two?  Oh, behave!

Warm rocks and wet sand

Beach-combing this morning; my husband was deeply disappointed that Mr Cappuccino Man seems to be taking a day off…  So peaceful and blissfully tranquil out on the bay, we shared the beach with about fifteen people and everyone calls “good morning!” to each other, so nice; Sienna and other dogs sniffing each others butts politely along the lines of prescribed doggie etiquette… She trots past flocks of seagulls that chatter to each other in a vaguely outraged manner like little old ladies, and genteelly hurry along in a “don’t show them you’re scared” kind of a way.  We brewed a pot of tea and had some of Mum’s muffins with yogurt for brekky out on the patio…  It’s going to be a hot one today, so swimming again this arvo.

Banana yellow catamaran in the flowers

If you take the time to look up close the coastline is home to a diverse and fertile ecology.  We’re accustomed to thinking of the bush as colourless and drab when actually the colours can be quite vibrant.  Most of the flowers of the coast are either yellow or mauve and small in size, often set off with all shades of green.
We found this catamaran tucked away in the bushes on the edge of the beach…

Sandy salty toes

So, here we are at the beach house, and blissfully happy.  The sun is broadcasting diamonds upon the water and the sand is scrunching white and squeaky clean under our bare feet.  This morning the tide was so far out we walked over a hundred metres out and we’re still just cooling our calves.
Today I’m wearing my white linen pants that I drafted from my favourite jeans, and a white top made from some leftover fabric that I posted about previously here.

Sienna is in heaven when we’re on the beach.  She’s whizzing and scampering about like a mad thing; its as though she too senses the ordered chaos of city life has gone.

Btw, have you ever seen ducks on the ocean?  Lookee here!  Who would have thought?!

A Walk on the Foreshore…

For something a bit different today I’m taking you on a walk with Sienna and me.  We usually head out for an hour each morning and briskly zoom along to get our heart rate up high.  This is Sienna’s favourite part of the day… on a beautiful day it’s mine too …

Self-drafted pants

These white linen pants I drafted from my favourite jeans (see here) and even though I’ve got my new pants pattern Burda 7944 that I really like; I still love the fit and shape of these I’m wearing today and think I will use this again.  And again.  The top of the pants is a very flattering shape as it isn’t darted or pleated, but has a separate shaped waistband that is curved to fit.  Most dressmakers will know that a flat bit of fabric however it is darted, tucked, pleated or manipulated will still not fit as well as properly curved and pieced garments.  Yes, it’s more time consuming to cut and sew, but there it is.
Whenever I’ve sewn pants with a curved waistband the fit is always superior to a straight waistband.  The trade-off is that a curved waistband uses more fabric, to a waste-phobe like me that is something to struggle with.  Alternatively you can try to dart a straight waistband to achieve the curved fit you require… problems, problems; oh, the dilemmas of achieving the perfect fit!  A common anthem for seamstresses the world over!  I guess it doesn’t ever get any easier, but the challenge is what keeps us going.  That and the satisfaction of a producing a great pair of pants – finally!  And I do love these pants.  I’ve decided to reuse the fabric from my other white linen pants posted about before, as they just don’t do it for me any more.  Another project.  Hmm.  At last reckoning I already have about six unfinished projects lurking about the place.  And yesterday I went to Fabulous fabrics and bought some more fabric.  And I also bought three new patterns the day before.  Confession time.  Hanging my head in shame.
Moving right along, I’ve had a few queries as to the absence of Sienna; well, she’s always around but doesn’t always deign to slip into the photos.  Recently she spent a day getting pampered at the beauty salon and has come home with a beautiful new ‘do.  See how stunning she looks in her photos!
