2015; a retrospective

The last day of the year! now for some riveting (haha) navel-gazing upon the creation and wearing of my clothing.  Kicking off with my favourite outfit pictures from each month.

SO:
What have I made: Quantitatively, 72 things, including 22 things for others.  This number is counting each underwear set of bra with two matching undies as one thing even though technically it’s three things! as well I made some beanie/dress/shirt outfits for preemies, and counted each set as one thing.
Knitted garments: 18

From existing stash: 19

What am I wearing: I keep my daily outfit blog updated pretty faithfully and really do analyse it…  I tot up the numbers last day of the month, and update an excel spreadsheet on the last day of the year; but won’t subject you to that.. you’re welcome #statsfreak #whatcanisayilovenumbers
This year, 93.8% of clothing I wore was made by myself; this number includes underwear, socks and tights but not shoes.  Qualitatively, things I wear that are not made by me are my Metalicus tops, that I’ve had for years and years and have no intention of throwing out just to appease my insane me-made sensibility, and scarves that have been given to me as gifts by family.  Not throwing those out either, obviously!

I have not bought any ready to wear clothing for SIX years now!

My most worn items of clothing this year can pretty much be summed up in the following pics:

and also my cream infinity scarf and my raincoat got a lot of use

I took part in the vintage pattern pledge for the first time, and managed to make six things…
 vintage pattern pledge 15
Favourite creations of the year: well, obviously I’m pretty pleased with my 1yr1outfit efforts! although I might not wear them super-frequently I am very proud I managed to fulfil the challenge successfully.
As far as wearability and suiting my lifestyle; my favourite creations for the year are probably my watercolour silk dress (pictured above), my recently finished Japanese indigo-dyed dress, also my pleather/wool moto jacket rates pretty highly in the satisfaction stakes.

A huge honour was when Heather of Closet Case Patterns named her new pyjama pattern for me!  *pinches self*  pictured in March, above

Fails:  I tried to grow indigo for a home-dyeing experiment… FAIL.  Not a single seed even germinated  *sob*  I’m still getting over that one…   I let my blue sea change top go.  Lesson learnt: panne velvet is awful stuff and good for… well,  practically nothing, actually.    My purple silk tulip skirt was shaping up to be real goodie but got chewed up in the washing machine when it somehow snuck in with a load of denim jeans *sob* like your hand knit lace shawl versus a new puppy, obviously that’s not going to end well.  I discovered lingerie made from old recycled tights does not last nearly as long as lingerie made with new fabric SURPRISE….. NOT!  and also my recurring epiphany that pleather/leather skirts are kinda stupid things and not comfortable at all.  I don’t know why I keep on torturing myself by adding them to my wardrobe really, just a dumb glutton for punishment, I suppose.  Not quite ready to give up on my chocolate one just yet though, I’m going to give it another chance to prove itself next winter….

But anyway; overall, as far as my sewing/wardrobing efforts go I’m pretty happy with the year.

Most importantly of all!  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who reads my blog and takes the time to leave a comment, every kind word is very much appreciated.  *mwah*  I love that the sewing community are such a busy and happy bunch; creating like mad, inspiring and supporting each other always, wearing our creations happily and proudly, and sharing freely, openly and generously with each other.

Thank you so much! big hugs all round  🙂 and here’s to a wonderful 2016!

me-made May 2015; an overview

So, this year I took part in Zoe‘s me-made May yet again.  This is my eighth time joining in!
Obviously it’s practically an institution now, and even though I’m pretty sure it’s not aimed towards people like me; who comfortably wear an entire outfit made by myself every single day and have done for years, well, I still like to join in.  It’s fun and maybe I’d feel out-of-it and maybe a bit bereft if I did not!  FOMO!
ha, did I just successfully employ un buzz-acronym of our time? wow.  Before I know it I might even have got to grips with something else non-dinosaury, like my phone even.
Or not.

Anyway.  My outfit pictures with the links to everything I am wearing are all in my MMM15 Flickr album here, should anyone wish to have a proper lookie.  I have no idea why some of the pictures are huge, sorry about that.  I think it’s the way Flickr organises them or something.

So, the obligatory postmortem…
Did I learn anything?
Nope!  Not really!  That’s ok though, I’m fine with just joining in for the sake of it!
Any holes?  Any workhorses?
No holes in my wardrobe, massive surprise, that! haha.  I had a few repeats, but mixed it up some and discovered a few nice new combinations that I liked and will repeat over winter. Most importantly, have reluctantly wrenched some old but tired things, kicking and screaming from my wardrobe and transferred them to the potential Salvoes bag.  *sigh*  The camera is a harsh and wretchedly truthful beast!
Workhorses: in this season; white tops, black tights, little knitted cardigans and brightly coloured little skirts.  For warmth; my moto jacket, and my peppercorn cardigan for lounging around in the evening.
Thoughts on the photos?
I’ve kind of got my tripod-and-remote routine down pat now and so it’s pretty painless and easy.  I kept to one very convenient-to-me location, and allowed myself no more than 1 minute to take a few photos, and just selected one for the Flickr group.
I’ve thought of doing “interesting” daily photos again like I’ve done in the past for previous me-made months, but for this year and my current life, just doing boring ones was a good choice for me.

And that’s it! I think?  Until next year.  I’m sure I’ll probably continue to join in and do this as long as Zoe chooses to host it.

Inside Out

Today is Fashion Revolution Day; where we are supposed to reflect upon the question; who made my clothes?  And yes, I am wearing everything inside out too even though I have no labels.
You can find out more about how to get involved here

Details:
Dress and petticoat; Vogue 1160, brown chiffon and silk charmeuse, details here and petticoat here.  It was a little difficult to get the zip on the dress done up inside out!! so it’s only partway up  😉 but the evidence is covered up with my cardigan so that’s ok
Cardigan; Audrey in Unst, knitted by me from wool I bought in Paris (Renaissance dyeing 4 ply poll dorset), details here
Sandals; la soffitada Gilde, from Zomp shoes

Now, on another note; I have been updating my daily outfit blog for the last year and a third and although I will continue to do so I have decided to make that blog private, for the time being at least.  There’s no sudden or dramatic reason for this decision, just call it a dawning self-awareness, if you like.  I guess I’m starting to feel a little self conscious about it, like publicising it is a bit silly.  And that maybe I prefer to maintain a higher standard for the material I am dumping out there, for public perusal, on the poor ol’ world wide web, since few my daily outfits are particularly exciting.
Except um, haha, *blush* I’ve just remembered that I’ve signed up for me-made May 2015! But I’ll be posting those on the Flickr group, just like everyone else  🙂
Thank you so very much to everyone who “liked” my posts  *mwah* and probably I’ll still do a 6-different ways post here periodically, to round up some of my favourites.  I’ll see how it goes  🙂

2015 plans

Hello!
I’ve been thinking about my 2015 wardrobe requirements and sewing plans for this year.  To be honest I was kinda shocked at the sheer number of things I sewed last year, and not in a good way!  It wasn’t lost on me that my favourite projects for last year were also the ones upon which I lavished the most time and thought.  So I’m thinking that to slow down, take my time, be more mindful; would be both a rewarding and sensible thing to do.   I mean, I have clothes.  Quite enough really.  But I still want to sew.  So it makes sense to concentrate on making fewer, but more individually labour intensive things, with an eye to provenance, longevity and quality of finish.
You know that word of the year thing?  I haven’t had one before but it’s a fun concept, yes?  Anyway I’m giving it a burl.  This year I wish to be more thoughtful in my sewing.
My on-going pledge to abstain from RTW will continue, so there may be a certain amount of maintaining-my-basic-wardrobe kind of sewing happening too, but I still would like to stretch myself with a few new patterns and skills.  It would be cool to make a few more Pattern Magic things.  And shoes!  And some Alabama Chanin sewing, which is definitely an exercise in slow thoughtful sewing!

Also, and in the same vein, last year Nicki of this is moonlight contacted me about participating in her one Year one Outfit project.  You can read all about it on her blog; essentially the project involves making for yourself an outfit using all materials sourced and produced locally.  Obviously this does not mean simply visiting the local Spotlight store! but at a much more grass roots level.  So for me, finding Western Australian farmers and sustainable producers of their own yarns and/or fabrics, and making a high quality outfit using only these.  This also pertains to all dyes and finishing touches!  The only thing I think maybe we can give ourselves a pass on is thread, since I think the only threads we can get here are Gutermann’s.  I’m pretty excited about this project and my brain is already buzzing with opportunities.  This one should be quite a challenge!
I’ll just give one clue as to just one of my ideas, contained in an instagram I posted late last year from my friend J’s farm in Cunderdin… 😉

Also;
I was quite inspired by Lauriana and Sue‘s vintage pattern journeys of last year.  The vintage sewing pattern pledge is conceived and hosted by Marie of A Stitching Odyssey, and I only wish I’d thought of joining in last year!  Whatevs, this year I’m IN.

During 2015, I hope to sew up at least five of my vintage sewing patterns.

So, I shall see how I go!  Some of these things might overlap.
Oh, and also this year, I will join in with Anne of Pretty Grievances‘ Jungle January for the first time; it’s in its third year so what took me so long?! and hopefully Zoe‘s Me-Made May, as per usual.
wrt the former; my Jungle January fabric is flapping on the line, drying, as we speak! um, should that be type? read?  anyway all I shall reveal for now is that it is totally different from the expected, mwahaha. 😉
To be appearing here, very soon…

2014; a retrospective

So, on the last day of the year I like to look back upon some of my favourite sewing creations/outfits/pictures for the year, one for each month…
January

February

Some stats:
Number of garments made; 73 items, counting each set of 1 bra + 2 undies as one item.  This includes 15 items that I made for family.
Knitted garments; 5
Garments re-fashioned from old clothes; 8
The same number of items that entered my wardrobe also exited my wardrobe, so I’m holding steady on numbers there.  I ruthlessly got rid of a few things that didn’t get worn at all this year, and I’m getting better at letting go of really old things that are past their best, yay! There’s still room for improvement there, though  🙂

Also, this year I took a picture of my ootd every day and totted up the totals.  Why? because stats are very dear to my analytical little heart  🙂  This year 95.6% of the clothing I wore was made by me. This includes all my underwear, socks and hosiery.  Woot!
The remainder comprises scarves given to me by family, and my old MetalicusTshirts and Country Road cardigans that I still love and cannot bear to part with.
I have eschewed buying RTW for 5 years now.  Yay!

Favourites: top place just has to go to my Alabama Chanin ensemble.  I’m HUGELY proud of this outfit, and feel very sort of high-end and couture-y when I’m wearing it.  Funny I know, since the fabrics are quite humble and ordinary in themselves and it is not extraordinarily eye-catching upon a casual glance.  I don’t think I’ll ever tire of it  🙂  I also really adore both my Swedish dress and my blue ray dress.
Probably the biggest thing for me this year has been that I made for myself shoes! two pairs of rudimentary shoes, or maybe three counting my slippers?  OK then, just two  😉  They’re certainly not the most wonderful shoes in the world but I feel pretty proud of them and want to make a few more pairs sometime.

Just for the record though, I’m definitely not giving up buying RTW shoes.  Gotta leave myself something!

Fails…  haha, well there were a few less than fantabulous moments in there, ahem. Some honourable mentions:
My pale coffee jeans, which sadly turned out to be beige slacks after all.  The fabric felt weirdly stiff and crackly and plasticky against my skin, and there was a slight camel toe issue that I worked on a couple of times but which remained stubbornly unfixable.  Binned.
My leatherette baseball skirt; it’s the second leatherette skirt I’ve made that never felt right.  I think maybe leatherette skirts are not very me.  Fortunately, Cassie took a shine to it and it now lives in her wardrobe.  She’s worn it several times too, so yay!  Handballed.
My raspberry Alabama Chanin tank dress.  I already covered the problems in the blog post.  It’s in the process of being hopefully improved upon and fabulous-ifed as we speak.  Working on it.

I enjoyed keeping my daily outfit blog and I think I may still continue doing it again next year.  The photos are not super high quality, definitely of the no frills variety; but I’m OK with that since it’s just like a quick visual thing for me to see how my outfit actually looks from an outside eye.  That’s a very helpful thing sometimes.  Some days I find an ensemble especially pleasing to me, which is good.  Other times I’ve realised that the outfit I’ve been wearing all day is actually pretty meh, if not downright awful. *sigh*

So that’s it for another year!  I’d like to send out a huge mushy thank you to everyone who reads my blog and who takes the time to comment, thank you!  It’s not so long ago when sewing my own clothes felt like a very lonely hobby.  So I’m hugely grateful to have “met’ so many lovely and inspiring like-minded creatives… and yay! for the internets for enabling us to connect and support and cheer each other on.
See you all in 2015!

Mum. A blog hop. And a thank you.

First things first; I thought I’d open on a note both lovely and interesting, my mother wearing a creation made by her.  Mum knitted her top, the Jo Sharp sideways ribbed top using Jo Sharp Soho Summer DK Cotton in col. Pennant.  The whole top is knitted, or actually I should say ribbed? in one piece.  You cast on one sleeve end, rib the whole thing sideways all the way along to the end of the opposite sleeve.  An interesting and effective design idea!  Thank you so much Mum, for letting me share your gorgeous creation here.

Next; I have been invited by Yoshimi and Sara to join in the blog-writing blog hop.  Thank you very much to Yoshimi and Sara!

1. Why do you write?
I have no idea! since I’m not very good at it.  I got middling marks for writing at school.  In spite of that I still enjoy writing, just quietly and for myself.  I even wrote a novel once.  Don’t worry, the world will never ever be subjected to that particular load of nonsense!  It was a detective/murder mystery.  A pretty bad one.
I started keeping a blog to document all my handmade things, when I realised at one point that I had sewn/knitted/whatever, tonnes of things that had been made, loved, worn with pride until they wore out and then got tossed, things that lived in my memory alone, never photographed.  I felt a bit sad about that.  I must have talked about it with my sister-in-law because she mentioned that she planned to give me a photo album for a birthday present, in which I could keep a visual record of my handmade things with a short description.  She was searching for a suitable one, and in the meantime I commenced taking photos of the handmade things I still had.  I can’t remember what happened next, I think she couldn’t find a good album, then I discovered a few daily outfit fashion blogs which I really enjoyed and decided to start something similar about my sewing and how it related to my personal style.  It was just a quiet and playful thing for me, like a diary, and for ages I barely knew any other sewing blogs existed!  I wrote about many silly trivial things that amused me at the time.  Discovering and joining Wardrobe Refashion was a huge turning point.  I signed up for three months, then six months, then For Life.  That big BIG pledge to never buy ready to wear clothes, ever again.  Hehe, I made that pledge so carefree-ly and lightly and it’s taken me a few years to realise how huge it was!  Obviously I then became a lot more serious and intentional in my sewing.
Lately my writing mojo has dropped off a bit.  My sewing mojo and knitting mojo is going as strong as ever but I am struggling to write posts.  It’s silly, because I can write quite freely and easily if I know no one is going to read it.  Sometimes I ask my husband and he says to just not write anything if I don’t want, and just have the pictures.  I’ve got to admit, it’s tempting.
2. How is your blog different to others of the same genre
I think my blog is quite plain and ordinary, and I am perfectly comfortable with its plainness.  It has nothing that makes it stand out at all.  However maybe it is also unique, in the same sense that everyone’s blog is a unique expression of their own particular self?  Stating the obvious, there.
I don’t know.  I do my own thing and don’t really follow the pack.
Ok, I thought of something!  Parentheses are almost non-existent in my blog.  Because excessive and unnecessary use of parentheses is a secret pet hate.
O I know.  Lame.
3. What are you working on right now
Usually I am pretty disciplined about only working on one thing at a time, in an organised manner, finishing and dutifully cleaning up before allowing myself to start on the next thing.  Currently I happen to be working on two things, but one is knitting, one is sewing so that’s kind of OK in my mind.  I pick up the knitting and churn out a couple rows in spare moments, whereas the sewing project is a bit more intensive and requires Proper Undivided Attention, ahem.
OK, so.  The knitting project, that is very different and interesting, in my opinion, a patchwork design that I happened upon while knitting the boys’ Icelandic jumpers, fell in love, and I just had to get some wool and start on it.  Even though summer is just around the corner.  Hehe.  Totally illogical!
In sewing, well I have recently finished a sundress to be photographed and blogged about very very soon, and am now partway through drafting and muslining a rather challenging and very interesting dress.   When/if I finish it, then I Shall Reveal.  *said with maximum drama*  Of course it may well be so disastrous that I decide to not waste real fabric on it… in which case I will move onto any one of the next few things on my mental list, a pretty summer blouse, this year’s bathers, a big pfouffy skirt, or an Issey Miyake ensemble.
4. What is your writing process
Oh dear.   Writing process?  I just sit down and start, usually very awkwardly in some clumsy clunky opening sentence that later gets deleted in self-disgust.  I write a bit more, then a bit more, then loosen up and manage to be slightly less clunky, freely associate, get on a bit of a writing roll.  Writing a tonne of silly nonsense that all gets deleted later.  Actually, upon reflection, I will usually delete and/or re-write maybe 80% of what I have written before hitting “publish”.
I proofread for spelling and grammar like a maniac and often will obsessively go back to correct things like a typo, an errant comma or an extra space; after publishing.
Primarily, I really try to be factual, informative and fair, and for my blog to be something that I would like to read.

Now I am passing the blog hop baton onto Sue, of fadanista, and to Megan of create with wild abandon, two other sewing bloggers also from Perth.  I’m looking forward to reading their answers to the same questions!

Oh, one more thing!  I just want to say, a big Thank You So Much to whoever nominated me for Burda’s 50 best blogs list, and also to everyone who voted for me.
Thank you thank you so very much!  I was totally thrilled to be notified that my blog is on the list.  I’m so happy that people like it, and am so very honoured to have received your votes of confidence!  🙂

Me-Made May 2014

So once more I have LOVED taking part in me-made May again this year!  I participated in the Flickr group every day but decided to just write one summary post here on my blog about my experience; which is this one!
So what to say, what to say…
My pledge….  I went 100% me-made, including all underwear, hosiery, sock and knitwear, all of my clothes.  The only exceptions were, as usual, my shoes.
Did I enjoy it…? YES! always  🙂  I love looking at everyone’s outfits and feeling like part of a community.  I think that for those of us who sew our own clothes, this is the best way for us to have our own annual, if virtual, seamsters’ convention.
Did I learn anything…? well that I have plenty of clothes (blush) with no gaps that need filling really, and nearly all my current wardrobe is made by me, which is a pretty excellent stat, if I say so myself.  I kinda half-tried, not-very-strictly to go without repeating an item during May, which seems a very silly and shallow goal but a goal that has the well-intentioned side effect of forcing me to rootle out things in the wardrobe that I am not wearing very much and attempt to integrate them more fully amongst the very well-worn items.  I think it’s good for me to force this every now and again, because let’s face it; I sew a lot, because it’s my hobby and I love it.  But actually wearing everything that I sew doesn’t always happen fairly and equitably.  I do wear my own creations all the time, but like everyone I have favourites.  Me-made May is always a good opportunity to play at styling more of my own closet.
And did I repeat any items…? my two pairs of black tights, my navy and paprika tights, my burnt orange Nettie bodysuit and my ivory Pattern Magic twist top each got worn twice.  Everything else got worn just once, and I managed to really mix it up with some new outfits that I really enjoyed.  It was fun playing about and trying to make the most of my wardrobe.
Favourite outfit…? can’t decide, I like lots of ’em
Least favourite….? well yes, there were a few less than stellar days and I have singled out some items that should and most likely will, exit gracefully from my wardrobe.  Some things that I have acknowledged are undeniably shabby.  Photos do not lie.  A few things have been moved to the “potentially for the Salvoes” bag, and I am going to try very very hard to actually deposit them in the bin sometime.  It’s going to be tough but I think I can manage to do it.
How did taking the photos go….?  well this time I found it to be pretty easy and no biggie actually!  I’ve traditionally complained about taking photos of myself during me-made May, but that is probably because I’ve traditionally set a certain standard for myself and burned myself out.  This year, I had more of a no frills approach and set myself a time limit of ONE minute, and NO MORE in which to take my photo.  And that was that.  Also, I am already taking a quick photo every day for my daily outfit photo blog too so it has become just “a thing” that I do once a day anyway, a part of my daily routine.  Occasionally while on holidays I get Craig to take my picture; and he has a pretty low tolerance for this activity so the process is still quite speedy with minimal fussing allowed!
So that is that for another year.

The entire Flickr group’s photos are here, and all of my May outfits can be viewed separately in my own MMM14 Flickr album here.

And also; today marks the last day of Yoshimi’s and my joint photo blog; the year-long photo maisonette experiment.  I’ve really looked forward to and enjoyed looking at Yoshimi’s photos every day.  It’s been a fun, enjoyable and very interesting exercise for me; and Yoshimi, thank you so much for saying you would join in taking part with me. I know you are very busy with your work and family so I am so appreciative that you agreed to make the commitment.
Also I hope that everyone who did view the blog enjoyed the differing, and sometimes very similar views of our daily lives in Japan and Australia respectively.  Thank you to all those who did stop by!  Your kind words were always very much appreciated  🙂

Inside Out

Meggipeg alerted me to the fact that today, 24th April, is Fashion Revolution Day; thank you Megan! and it was lovely to finally hang out together, in person  🙂
So I am wearing my dress and my cardigan inside out for the day.
A year ago today the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh collapsed killing 1133 people and injuring over 2500 more.  Fashion Revolution is suggesting that out of respect and acknowledgement we wear our clothes inside out to display the hidden inner workings; the labels, seams, hems and bindings that seamsters labour over.  If you bought your clothes readymade there are more things you can do; outlined here.
Generally I stay away from political and social conscience opinions here on my blog, although in person I can be quite the bore on a subject once I get going!  Don’t get me started!  However the issue of ethical manufacture of consumable goods, particularly clothing; is dear to my heart and one of the primary reasons why four years ago I started down this rather bizarre path of eschewing ready-to-wear clothing entirely and of making with my own two hands just about every item of my clothing that I possibly could.  I don’t know if it was a sensible or reasonable decision; but it felt like a good idea at the time and years later it still does, so I’m going along with it, still.  I can make my own, so I do.  It was my own decision and I know not one that another person would or could make.
Wearing your clothes inside out for a day may not seem like much at all in the scheme of things, but may make more people aware of the questionable ethics of “fast” fashion.  A day of tweeting to brands may make a difference, and I hope so.  People may treat it like an amusing distraction in an otherwise uneventful working week, but any action that makes people think twice is a good thing.  For me, I do think about the ethics of clothing manufacture a lot but the reality is that the greatest hardship I will undergo today is going without the use of my pockets.  Also, maybe someone will point out that my clothes are inside out, but probably not.  People are quite polite around here  🙂

Details:
Dress; dress M with minor modifications, from the Stylish Dress Book by Yoshiko Tsukiori, red cotton, details here
Cardigan; knitted by me, Jo Sharp fitted cardigan in Soho Summer dk cotton, colour Calico, details here
Scarf; a strip of cotton jersey
Shoes; Bronx, from Zomp shoes
